Bulldog Sports Roundup

Brown tosses perfect game
YSHS freshman Ethan Brown pitched a perfect game against the Bulldogs’ rival Jefferson on Tuesday, May 2.

The Bulldogs’ fielding was perfect, and Brown overcame some first inning control problems to strike out 10 Broncos during the ’Dogs’ 12–0 home win.

The game ended on an exhilarating note when Clayton Wolfe stretched as far as he could to catch a throw at first base for the final out.

Wolfe also sent a mighty blast over the left field fence to highlight the Bulldog offense. Jonathon Haller had three hits and Todd Sheets had two.

The rest of the week was rough for the Bulldogs, as they lost three games: 15–1 to Tri-Village on Thursday, May 4, and 20–13 and 19–6, to Ridgeville Christian on Saturday, May 6. The Bulldogs are now 3–15.

On Thursday Yellow Springs hosted Tri-Village in the Division IV sectional tournament. The Bulldogs scored first, but quickly fell behind.

Ridgeville came to town for the completion of a suspended game and a second contest. The suspended game began in the fourth inning with Ridgeville up 10–5. Both offenses were in high gear but the ’Dogs were unable to catch up. Brown and Ben Armstrong had two hits apiece, and Drew Stratton had a career performance, hitting two doubles and batting in 4 runs.

The second game was well contested for three innings, as pitcher Todd Sheets kept Ridgeville batters off balance. The ’Dogs were rallying in the bottom of the third and had the bases loaded with the score 4–3 when the Lions brought in their ace pitcher, who stifled the rally.

Tennis wins 2, loses 1
The YSHS tennis team started the week strong with a 3–2 win against Xenia Christian on Tuesday, May 2, and a 5–0 win against Miami Valley’s C team on Thursday, May 4. The Bulldogs then lost to Cedarville 3–2 on Saturday, May 6. The team’s match against Meadowdale on May 8 was canceled. The Bulldogs are now 10–5.

Against Xenia, losses from Alex Turner and Laura Garcia at second and third singles were balanced by wins from Olivia Chen at first singles and doubles teams Mori Rothman and Zac Katz-Stein and Erin Silvert-Noftle and Kyle Buchwalder.

Singles players Chen, and Mori and Jesse Rothman easily knocked off their Miami Valley opponents. First doubles team Max Buchwalder and Zeke Hardman won 6–4, 6–3, and second doubles team Silvert-Noftle and Marina Casson won 7–5, 6–3.

Against Cedarville, Chen won her match 6–3, 6–2, while Turner lost 6–1, 6–2 and Kyle Buchwalder, in his first attempt at singles, lost 6–3, 6–2. Mori and Jesse Rothman won 6–1, 6–1, and Max Buchwalder and Hardman lost 5–7, 3–6.

Softball loses 2 games
The YSHS softball team ceded a 15–12 matchup against Jefferson on Tuesday, May 2, and lost 19–9 in six innings to Ridgeville Christian on Thursday, May 6.

Against Jefferson, Bailey Linse pitched a seesaw battle in which the Lady Bulldogs led 8–4 going into the fourth. Alana Harrah led off the bottom of the fourth with a base hit and scored on a triple by Megan Burrick. The next three batters walked and scored on a double by Lauren Miles and a single by Ryder Comstock. Then Miles and Comstock both scored on passed balls. But the Broncos scored 5 runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead.

Against Ridgeville, starting pitcher Miles left the game in the bottom of the fourth with the Lady Bulldogs up 6–4. Linse pitched well in relief but gave up seven walks and five hits.
