sports Bulldog Sports Roundup Baseball gets 1st win of year The YSHS baseball team got its first win of the year on Wednesday, April 12, defeating Emmanuel Christian 14–4 at home. The next day, the Bulldogs beat Jefferson 22–9 on the road. YSHS is now 2–4. Pitcher Clayton Wolfe was the star of Wednesday’s game. He gave up just five hits and struck out 10. He also was three for three at bat, including a home run. Ben Armstrong went three for four, and Todd Sheets hit a double and batted in three runs. On Thursday, the Bulldogs exploded for 11 runs in the first inning, highlighted by Andrew Ferguson’s triple. Jefferson came back with 6 runs and it looked like the game might last forever. But freshman reliever Ethan Brown shut down the Broncos after the second inning. Joe Fugate had three hits, including a double, and four RBI. Brown added two hits and two RBI while Armstrong had two hits. Borchers sets 2 meet records Borchers was elected the meet’s Outstanding Performer after he won the 800 in 1:57.94 and the mile in 4:27.09. His performance, along with Brad Benning-Clark’s first-place high jump of 5'8", helped propel the Bulldogs to a fifth-place finish out of nine teams at the meet. Xenia (80 points) edged Cincinnati Anderson by 3 points to win the boys title. Yellow Springs, with no runners in the 100, 200 and 400 dashes, had 68 points. On the girls side, Loveland dominated with 131 points to 96 for Greeneview. Yellow Springs, with five girls competing, finished seventh out of the nine schools with 20 points. John Pamplin launched the discus 124'4" for second place, and Issa Walker sprang to 5'4" in the high jump to place third. The two-mile relay team (Borchers, Andy Sontag, Evan Firestone and Andy Peters) took third place. Softball team gaining experience Against Jefferson, sophomore Alana Harrah had three hits, including a three-RBI triple. With slow steps and some goal setting, the Lady Bulldogs have seen improvement already in the season, coach Jack Gaul said. The team includes a group of freshmen who have never played fast-pitch softball but have worked hard, and, with the help of their more veteran teammates, have learned the basics of the sport, Gaul said. Last week’s game against Cedarville was rescheduled for May 11. The game against Ridgeville Christian that was originally scheduled for Friday, April 21, was canceled and has not yet been rescheduled.
