sports Bulldog Sports Roundup Track teams open season Andy Peters finished third in the 800 in 2:13.5 and fifth in the mile. Anthony Carter finished fourth in the long jump, clearing 17 feet 6.5 inches, and seventh in the high jump. He joined Ron Cobb, Issa Walker and Brad Benning-Clark for a fifth-place finish in the 400 relay. John Pamplin came in fifth in the discus. Clayton Wolfe finished sixth in the shot put. Eighth-place finishers were Wolfe in the discus, and Walker, in both the high jump and the long jump. The Yellow Springs JV team finished second, ahead of National Trail and behind Wayne, in a tri-meet on Wednesday, March 29. Sam Borchers and Andy Peters led the team. Borchers won the 400 meter dash in 52.7 and the two-mile run in 10:49.6. Peters won the mile in 5:05 and anchored the winning two-mile relay, which also included Evan Firestone, Mori Rothman and Ben Adams. Second-place finishes went to Carter in the long jump, Firestone in the mile, Wolfe in the shot put and Matt Halm in the 800. The YSHS girls track team finished third in last Wednesday’s tri-meet with 23 points. Alisha Walker won the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds. Tina Peters won the mile in 6:07 and the 400 in 70.9 seconds. Walker added a second-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 26 feet two inches. She then teamed with Jessica Kellar, Kristen Foster and Leslie Holland to place second in the 400 relay. Holland also finished second in the 300-meter dash in 29.6. Foster finished third in the long jump, and Jennifer Barnett placed third in the discus. The McKinney School track meet scheduled for April 4 has been canceled. Baseball shutout in opener Thursday’s beautiful weather found the young ’Dogs hosting Southeastern’s JV team. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3–1 lead in the third. Ethan Brown, Joe Fugate, Jaimie Kitzmiller and Logan Sage all had their first career hits. Unfortunately, four errors in the fifth put Southeastern ahead 10–4, on their way to a 12–4 win. Poor fielding and a lack of hits led to a 10–0 Yellow Springs loss to Cedar Springs, Mich., in a night game at Wright State on April 3. Todd Sheets gave up one earned run in three innings. Tennis team wins first match Jesse Rothman won his first singles match 6–2, 6–4, and senior Carey Dixon followed with a 6–2, 6–2 win at second singles. Third singles senior Laura Garcia lost 3–6, 6–3, 3–6. At first doubles, Stephanie Goode and Peter Lovering lost 6–1, 6–2, but the second team, Alex Turner and Emile Fleming, won 6–1, 6–1. The reserve doubles team of Zac Katz-Stein and Zeke Hardman won a 10–2 pro set. Several tennis matches last week were canceled and rescheduled. Last Thursday’s home match against Cedarville was rescheduled for Wednesday, April 5. Friday’s match against Stivers has not been rescheduled. Monday’s match against Northeastern was rescheduled for May 1, at 4:30 p.m., at Northeastern. Youth baseball sign-up Youth Baseball Yellow Springs will hold tryouts/sign-ups for the Major League on Saturdays, April 8 and April 15, 3–5 p.m., at Gaunt Park. A pitchers and catchers clinic will be held April 8, 1–3 p.m., at Gaunt Park. The rain location is the Morgan Building gym. Kids 11 to 14 may play in the league. New and returning players should bring a glove. “Spring training” is scheduled for May, and the season will begin June 3. Youth soccer program to start spring season Games for the spring season of the Yellow Springs Youth Soccer Program will begin on Saturday, April 8. Players will remain on the teams that they were assigned to in the fall. New players are welcome to sign up by calling Bob Curley for Bronze Cup (767-7070), Lynn or Bill Hardman for Silver Cup (767-8433), and V.A. Onfroy-Curley for Gold Cup (767-7070).
