OBITUARIES
Cary D. Colbert
Cary David Colbert of Yellow Springs died after
an extended period of ill health on Friday morning, Feb. 24. He was 50.
He was born July 31, 1955, in Dayton, the son of Charles
and Rita Colbert.
Cary, also known as Mr. Rumba, was a colorful character
about town. He was a gourmet cook and an accomplished percussionist. He
will be remembered for his passion for ethnic cuisine and Afro-Cuban music
and his skills as a Conga drum player.
He is survived by his parents; his sisters and brothers
and their families: Shelley Colbert of Yellow Springs and her sons, Ben
and Spencer Beggs; Michele and her husband, José Junquera of Gainesville,
Ga., and their sons, Max and Zachary; Tod and his wife, Susie, of Milwaukee
and their children, Lauren, David and Jill; and a brother, Kim, also of
Milwaukee.
The family gathered privately to remember Cary. Plans
for a memorial fund to support young local musicians will be announced
at a later date.
Ulrike Wendland
Ulrike S. Wendland of Fairborn died Tuesday, Feb. 21,
in her residence, from complications related to cancer. She was 69.
She was born Dec. 30, 1936, in Iserlohn, West Germany,
the daughter of Friedrich and Katarina (Lenz) Belitza. During the 1990s,
Ulrike’s Flowers was a staple at the Farmers Market in Yellow Springs.
Her garden art, most notably the concrete rhubarb leaf stepping stones,
big baskets of dried flowers and her husband’s variety of herbs
were well known.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in
2000, her parents and a daughter, Patricia Wendland.
She is survived by children and their spouses, Paula
Elliot and her fiancé, Brett Fiepke, Elizabeth and Kevin Goodge,
Patrick and Alice Wendland, and James and Megan Wendland; six grandchildren,
Nicholas, Katarina, Lauren, Kirsten, Anna and Mackenzie; two sisters and
a brother-in-law, Anntraud Heotes, and Ruth and Erich Scherhag.
A service to celebrate her life was held Saturday,
Feb. 25, in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fairborn, with burial at
the Dayton National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice
of Dayton.
Paul E. House
Paul E. House of Springfield died Thursday, Feb. 22,
in Community Hospital. He was 65.
He was born on Jan. 17, 1941, in Yellow Springs, the
son of Neosha G. and Mary A. (Brown) House.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Paula
M. and Rodney White of Springfield, Neosha L. and Andrea Broady of Las
Vegas, Anthony W. Hutchins of Springfield, and Stephan and Carla Taylor
of Detroit; siblings, Shirley A. Turner and Harold L. House, both of Springfield;
seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 25, at the
Porter-Qualls Funeral Home in Springfield.
