Bulldog sports roundup

Boys tied for 2nd in MBC
The YSHS boys basketball team revenged an earlier season loss to Ridgeville Christian by beating their Metro Buckeye Conference rivals, 47–46, on Friday, Jan. 27, and tying the Lions for second place in the league, behind Jefferson.

The Bulldogs also suffered a 62–49 loss to Stivers on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and then handily beat Cedarville, 68–59, on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Bulldogs are now 11–3, and 7–2 in the MBC.

On Friday, the Lions took an early lead and were up 16–8 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs cut the lead to 2 at the half, trailing 23–21. The Bulldogs had their first lead of the game at 40–36 in the third, but Ridgeville came back to tie the score.

Ridgeville was up 46–43 with 55 seconds left, when Issa Walker made two free throws to put the ’Dogs within 1 point. Anthony Carter then made a steal, and with six seconds left, Brad Benning-Clark drove the ball to the net and scored the game-winning shot.

“It was a character game for us to see what kind of team we were,” coach Brad Newsome said. “We’re the type of team that can win close ball games, and now we’ve got the confidence by winning against Cedarville, who got the number one seed [in the Division IV Wright State bracket]. It was a measuring stick in the tourney.”

Yellow Springs is seeded second behind Cedarville, and in front of Ridgeville, seeded third, and Tri-Village, the fourth seed. The Bulldogs play their first tournament game against Springfield Catholic Central on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 6:30 p.m., at Tipp City High School. Southeastern plays the winner of that game on Feb. 27.

The ’Dogs were up by as much as 14 in the second quarter, but the Indians cut the gap to 36–26 at halftime and came within 1 at 53–52 with five minutes left in the game. The Bulldogs proceeded to outscore the Indians 15 to 7.
