Both teams played a physical and defensive game, each challenging the other’s passes. Megan Burrick scored 7 of her game-high 13 points in the first quarter. Jessica Kellar and Carly Bailey both scored 4 points and grabbed a couple of rebounds to put the team up 19–9 at the end of the period. Good defense helped the Lady Bulldogs extend their lead to 24–11 at the half. Burrick started the third period by stealing the ball and dishing off a pass between three defending Eagles to Ashanta Robinson for a score. Both teams traded baskets in the final period, matching each other score for score. “I felt Carly Bailey and Ryder Comstock did an outstanding job controlling the board at both ends of the court,” coach Alex Autry said. Boys hoops goes 2–1 The Bulldogs blew away Middletown, 72–35, on Friday, Jan. 13, then beat Carlisle, 51–36, on Saturday, Jan. 14. The ’Dogs lost 75–54 to Jefferson at an away game on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Bulldogs are third in the MBC, behind Jefferson (6–0) and Ridgeville (5–1). Middletown stayed with the Bulldogs in the first half of last Friday’s game and trailed 22–20. But the Bulldogs broke the gane open in the third quarter and outscored the Eagles 36–5. Brad Benning-Clark and Issa Walker each had 10 points in the quarter, hitting easy baskets off an unrelenting press. Against Carlisle, the Bulldogs jumped ahead 10–0 to set the game’s tone. Up 28–19 at halftime, the ’Dogs took a small cut to their lead in the third quarter. But Carlisle could not smother the fire of lead scorer Ryan Silvert, who hit 5 3-pointers for a game-high 19 points. Benning-Clark had 14 points and Walker scored 10. The Bulldogs kept up with Jefferson throughout the first two periods, trailing 33–26 at the half. But Jefferson’s press forced 26 turnovers and opened up a series of transition baskets for the Broncos. Benning-Clark scored 29 points. Anthony Carter had 8 points and Jerrico Stubblefield scored 7. In the last several weeks, the seventh-grade boys basketball team beat Xenia Nazarene, 30–29, and Xenia Christian, 35–16, and lost to Dayton Christian, 36–23. The team is 5–3. Swim teams place 4th, 5th Both YSHS teams cut through prelims held on Saturday, Jan. 14, to get to the finals the following Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs’ 400 freestyle relay teams led both squads at the finals, swimming their best times of the season. The girls team (Tina Chen, Jenny Barnett, Miriam Barcus and Eve GunderKline) finished third in 4:38.56. The boys team (Jacob Wishart, Peter Lovering, Carey Dixon and Sam Borchers) placed second in 4:13.34. The 200 medley relay team (Barnett, Olivia Dixon, Chen and Barcus) placed eighth in the finals. The 200 freestyle relay (Olivia Dixon, Claire Triplett, Liz Zaff and Eve GunderKline) placed 12th. In individual competition for the girls, Barcus placed fourth in the 200 free and 500 free. Barnett placed seventh in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 backstroke. GunderKline was sixth in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Chen was eighth in the 50 free and 10th in the 100 free. Dixon placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke. The boys 200 medley relay (Wishart, Lovering, Dixon and Borchers) placed fifth. In the individual competition, Wishart placed third in the 200 and 500 free events. Lovering was third in the 200 IM and seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
