sports Lady ’Dogs win basketball opener The Yellow Springs High School girls basketball team opened the season with a 54–47 win over the Greenon Lady Knights on Saturday, Nov. 26. The Lady Bulldogs started out with opening night jitters, and Greenon jumped out to a 9–2 lead. After a timeout, the Bulldogs came back to form. Tenia Scarver and Ashante Robinson hit several key baskets to reduce the Lady Bulldogs’ deficit to 3 by the end of the first quarter. Carly Bailey, Jessica Keller and Ryder Comstock went to work under the basket in the second quarter, contesting every shot by the Knights. The teams ended the first half tied at 27. In the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs started fast, hitting 4 of their first 6 shots. Megan Burrick and Scarver both scored 6 points in the quarter to lead YSHS. In the fourth quarter, the Lady ’Dogs got their hands on every loose ball. As the Knights were challenging the lead, Bailey put in a critical shot to stop Greenon’s run. Scarver took advantage of her freethrow opportunities to finish the night with a team-leading 22 points. Robinson scored 13 points, Burrick put up 10, and Bailey and Comstock each had 4. The team’s new coach, Alex Autry, said Greenon challenged the Lady Bulldogs with tough plays inside the paint and outside the perimeter. “I’m proud of the effort the girls showed from the tip-off to the final buzzer,” Autry said. “They played their hearts out.” Contact: lheaton@ysnews.com Annual YSHS alumni basketball tourney The annual Yellow Springs High School alumni basketball tournament will be held Friday, Dec. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 31, in the high school gym.
