Fall athletes at YSHS recognized

Yellow Springs High School honored the athletes who competed in fall sports during the end of season sports awards ceremony at the high school on Wednesday, Nov. 2.

The McKinney School sports awards will be presented in the spring.

Members of the varsity soccer, cross country, volleyball and golf teams were also honored in the Metro Buckeye Conference, and football players were honored in the Northwest Central Conference.

Cross country
YSHS cross country coach Vince Peters presented Captains Bars to Tina Peters and Sam Borchers. Tina Peters received the girls Bulldog Award for the fourth consecutive year, and Borchers received the boys Bulldogs Award for the second year in a row.

Carey Dixon and Tina Peters received fourth-year awards. Borchers received a third-year award. Second-year awards went to Ben Adams, Andy Peters and Matt Halm, and first-year awards went to Evan Firestone, Brock GunderKline and Jake GunderKline. JV awards went to Rebecca Guest, Earnest Johnson and Anthony Pettiford.

Borchers was named to the First Team all district, First Team all region and First Team all state. Borchers was also named MBC runner of the year. Coach Peters was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Named to the MBC First Team were Borchers, Dixon, Firestone and Andy Peters. Adams was named Second Team all conference.

Football
YSHS football coach Jerome Crosswhite presented Ian Ferguson and John Haller the team’s Bulldog Award. Ferguson and Joe Lawhorn received fourth-year awards. Randy Pasch and Jerrico Stubblefield received third-year awards. Second year awards went to Anthony Carter, Josh Foster, John Haller, Matt Hull, Kumar Jenson, Dustin Salyers, Charlie Sellers, Drew Stratton, Mark Ward, Aaron Willis and Clayton Wolfe. First-year awards went to Levi Amstutz, Joey Bailey, Cory Daniels, Ferguson, Joe Fugate, Adrian Lester, S.J. Scott, Aaron Turner and Antonio Woodard.

Football players elected to the Northwest Central Conference Second Team were running back Matt Hull, linebacker Joey Bailey, defensive back Jerrico Stubblefield, offensive guard John Haller, offensive lineman Clayton Wolfe, defensive end and tight end Antonio Woodard and center Ian Ferguson. DBs Anthony Carter and Aaron Willis and fullback Josh Foster received Honorable Mention.

YSHS cheerleaders Chelsea Alexander, Chloe Laursen and Heather Semler received fourth-year awards, and Amanda Bush and Kristen Wiles received second-year awards.

Golf
YSHS golf coach Seth Bothwell gave the team’s Bulldog Award to Aaron Zaremsky.

Alex Visbal received a third-year letter. Jill Bothwell and Zaremsky received second-year letters. Joe Fugate, Kevin Sikes-Gilbert and Max Fleishman received first-year letters. JV awards went to Kevin Mayer, Eric Rudolf and Craig Tobey.

Visbal was named to the Second Team in the MBC. Fugate was named to the MBC Sportsmanship Team.

Boys soccer
YSHS boys soccer coaches Jim Hardman and Ben VanAusdal gave Bulldog Awards to David Suzel and Ryan Silvert.

Brandon Carver-Halley received the team’s Most Valuable Player award for defense, and James Butler and Ben Armstrong were named the MVPs on offense. Kevin Sikes-Gilbert received the team’s all-around MVP.

John Pamplin and Suzel received fourth-year letters. Kevin Carr, Carver-Halley and Silvert received third-year letters. Armstrong, Butler, Kyle Buchwalder, Abeo Miller and Mori Rothman earned second-year awards. First-year awards went to Max Buchwalder, Peter Carver, Carey Dixon, Nick Eastman, Andrew Ferguson, Emile Fleming, Brock GunderKline, Jake GunderKline, Zeke Hardman, Kumar Jenson, Yosef Johnson, Zac Katz-Stein, Jesse Rothman, Todd Sheets, Sikes-Gilbert, Sonny Thomas and Alex Turner.

JV awards went to Ethan Brown, Raphael Brukner, Asa Casenhiser, Kalson Cheow, Dylan Clonch, Matt Finn, Tyler Fox, Simon Freeman, Emilio Garcia, August Millman, Eric Rudolf and Taylor Smith.

Sikes-Gilbert was named to the First Team in the MBC and Second Team DIII Dayton North Sectional. He was the only freshman on either all-star team.

Carver-Halley was named to the First Team in the MBC, and Butler was named to the Second Team. Brock GunderKline received the MBC Sportsmanship Award.

Carver-Halley, Butler, Armstrong and Suzel received honorable mention in the DIII Dayton North Sectional. Suzel was also chosen to represent YSHS in the Senior All-Star Game at Fairborn High School on Nov. 13.

Girls soccer
YSHS girls soccer coach MacKenzie Reynolds named Megan Burrick the team’s most valuable offensive player. Jennifer Smith was named defensive MVP. India Scarver received the team’s Bulldog Award. Stephanie Goode received the most dedicated player award.

Burrick and Laura Garcia received fourth-year awards, Goode, India Scarver, Erin Silvert-Noftle and Smith received third-year awards, and Tina Chen, Lauren Miles, Sarah Morrison and Ellen Swisher received second-year awards. First-year awards went to Amanda Chapman, Olivia Chen, Ryder Comstock, Danielle Fulton, Eve GunderKline and Tenia Scarver. JV honors went to Rosa Dixon, Laura Hyde, Ericka Patterson, Amelia Shaw, Claire Triplett and Liz Zaff.

Smith was named to the First Team in the Southwest District, Division III. Burrick was named to the Second Team all district. Silvert-Noftle, India Scarver and Tenia Scarver received honorable mention. Goode was named to the district’s All Sportsmanship Team.

Smith, Silvert-Noftle and Burrick were named to the First Team in the MBC. India Scarver, Tenia Scarver and Morrison were named to the Second Team. Goode was named to the All Sportsmanship Team.

Volleyball
YSHS volleyball Coach Shirley Martin gave the varsity Bulldog award to Alisha Walker and the JV Bulldog award to Ashante Robinson. First-year varsity awards went to Bailey Linse and Crystal Reedy, and second-year awards went to Olivia Dixon, Ashlee Jackson, Alisha Lucas, Niquelle Orr and Walker.

JV awards were given to Jennifer Barnett, Kristen Foster, Jessica Keller, Élan Orr, Robinson and Kristen Semler.

Walker was named to the second team Metro Buckeye, and Dixon was elected to the All Sportsmanship Team in the MBC.

Borchers 2nd at Junior Olympics

YSHS junior Sam Borchers led the Dayton area’s high school all-star cross country team to victory Saturday, Nov. 19, with a second-place finish at the USA Track & Field Region V Junior Olympic Championships in Charleston, W.Va.

Robbie Adams of Xenia High School and Nate Weller of Eaton High School were also on the team, which will compete in the USA Cross Country Nationals in Providence on Saturday, Dec. 10. Sarah Matthews of Xenia High School along with Melissa Pope of Beavercreek High School, and Alison Steinbrunner of Tecumseh High School qualified as individuals.

Teams at YSHS raising funds

The Yellow Springs High School football and basketball programs are selling t-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants as a fundraiser. Proceeds will help purchase needed items for the football team and a new scoreboard for the gym.

Order forms are available at the YSHS library and the front office, Tom’s Market or from Donna Haller. Forms and payment must be returned to YSHS or to Haller at 423 West Limestone Street by Friday, Dec. 9, for delivery by Dec. 19.
