sports Bulldog sports roundup
Borchers wins DIII regional crown, earning return trip to state XC meet The Bulldog harriers went into Saturday’s Division III regional championship meet at Troy hoping for something of a repeat performance of last year when the team won the regional title. But hampered by an injured runner, the Bulldogs finished in sixth place with 189 points, missing by two spots their chance to advance to the state competition this weekend. Anna won the regional title with 79 points, followed by Minster (142), Versailles (153), Fort Loramie (154) and Van Werth Lincolnview (161). The Bulldogs still had reason to celebrate, when YSHS junior Sam Borchers won the regional championship for the second consecutive year. Borchers improved his time from last year by 16 seconds and won with an easy lead in 16:24. Starting out slow on the banks of the Great Miami River, Borchers waited until the last mile, just before climbing the levee, to take the lead and hold it to the finish. “Most people are so excited about qualifying they tend to go out too fast,” Borchers said. “So I just let them do what they do and took the lead just before the hill. I took the lead last year there…That’s just how we’ve been doing it.” Borchers, who is comfortable with his ability to remain out in front, said he spent the race hoping that the team would accompany him to state. “That’s what I was thinking about the whole race,” he said. “It’s a lot more enjoyable that way.” But Borchers is the only Yellow Springs runner this year who will compete in the Division III state meet on Saturday, Nov. 5. The race starts at 1:20 p.m. at the Scioto Downs race track in Columbus.
He has the fifth fastest time in the state going into the race, and his coach, Vince Peters, said he thinks Borchers has a good chance of doing better than his eighth-place finish last year. Asked if Borchers could potentially win the Division III state title, Peters hedged only a little. “We’ve got three guys on our team who hate to lose: Sam, Andy [Peters] and Evan [Firestone]. They’re all extremely fierce competitors,” Peters said. “I wouldn’t pick Sam to lose against anyone. He could take on anyone on a given day. I wouldn’t bet against him.” At the regional meet, Firestone came in at 22nd place, finishing in 17:26, a personal record, followed closely by Carey Dixon, who finished 26th in 17:37. Andy Peters, the Bulldogs’ second man runner who strained his knee at the district meet two weeks ago, finished in 96th place. Jake GunderKline finished 113th, Ben Adams finished 117th and Brock GunderKline was 123rd. Coach Peters expressed disappointment in the circumstances of the race, saying that “if Andy had had a normal race, we would have made it to state. I’m happy the guys ran well, but I’m sad as a coach and a parent because my kid’s the one hurt and my kid’s the one who needed to run well.” Tina Peters, representing the YSHS girls team at regionals, finished the Division III girls race in 80th place in 22:30. Football team wins final game In its last game of the season, the YSHS football team beat Lima Perry, 21–8, at home last Friday. The Bulldogs ended their season, 3–7. Yellow Springs jumped on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Joey Bailey to Antonio Woodward. The extra point was no good, and the ’Dogs led, 6–0. Anthony Carter scored the Bulldog’s second TD on a 47-yard pass from Bailey. Andrew Ferguson made the extra point. The Bulldogs’ Matt Hull scored the team’s last touchdown, in the third, on a 10-yard run. Bailey scored the 2-point conversion on a run, putting the Bulldogs up 21–0. Lima scored in the fourth quarter but could not make up the difference. Hull rushed for 168 yards, and Bailey was 6 of 12 passing for 119 yards and 2 scores.
