Boys soccer scores big shutout
Nearly every player on the YSHS soccer team got his moment of glory in the team’s dominating 15–0 win over the Southeastern Trojans on Thursday, Sept. 8. The Bulldogs outshot the Trojans 74–0.

The Bulldogs scored 4 times within the first 10 minutes of play. Forwards Ben Armstrong, Ryan Silvert, James Butler and Asa Casenhiser combined to score 3 more goals before the end of the half. The Bulldogs maintained the upper hand in the second half, getting their 8th goal on a header by Armstrong off a perfectly arched corner kick from Silvert.

The deal was sealed when the Bulldogs scored another three goals in quick succession.

Armstrong scored 3 goals, Casenhiser, Butler and Silvert each had 2, while Abeo Miller, Kevin Carr, Brandon Carver-Halley, Jake GunderKline, Kyle Buchwalder, and Andrew Ferguson each scored a goal. Assists were added by Silvert, who had 3, Brock GunderKline, 2, Buchwalder, 2 and Armstrong, Carr, and Ferguson each had 1. Goalie John Pamplin and defenders Kevin Sikes-Gilbert, Carver-Halley, Zeke Hardman, Max Buchwalder, and Jake GunderKline recorded their first shutout this season.

On Sept. 1, the Bulldogs lost 5–0 to Springfield Catholic, the top ranked Division III team in the Dayton area and second in the state. On Sept. 3, the Bulldogs opened Metro Buckeye Conference play by tying Troy Christian, 1–1. The Bulldogs also tied Fairborn, 1–1 on Sept. 6, and beat MBC rival Ridgeville Christian, 3–0, on Sept. 10.

The Bulldogs are now 3–3–2 for the season, 1–0–1 in the MBC, and are ranked sixth in the Division III Dayton area coaches poll.

The Bulldogs, who feature a roster full of underclassmen learning to adapt to a quicker, more physical style of soccer, are starting to come together, coach Jim Hardman said.

Girls soccer at full throttle
The YSHS girls soccer team started strong against Southeastern (5–2) on Sept. 8, giving the Lady Bulldogs their first win over the Lady Trojans on their home field in several years.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 3–2–1 overall and 1–1 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.

YSHS was led by the outstanding defense of India Scarver, Tenia Scarver, Ellen Swisher, Amanda Chapman and Rachel Trumbull. The offense of Erin Silvert-Noftle, Megan Burrick, Ryder Comstock and Laura Garcia took a total of 32 shots on goal. Keeper Sarah Morrison had 4 dramatic saves.

The Lady Bulldog JV soccer team lost its first game, 4–0, to Beavercreek on Saturday, Sept. 10. Goalie Megan Burrick had 13 saves.

Football falls to Cedarville
The YSHS football team dropped to 1–2 after losing at home, 48–14, to Cedarville on Sept. 9.

The Indians dominated the game’s first three quarters, outscoring the Bull- dogs 41–0.

YSHS finally got into the end zone in the fourth quarter when Anthony Carter scored on a 42-yard pass play from backup QB Adrian Lester. However, Cedarville returned the Bulldogs kickoff for another touchdown. Bulldog Matt Hull scored on a 7-yard run.

Hull ran for 48 yards on 10 carries and 100 yards on 5 kickoff returns. Carter, who started at quarterback, was 2 for 6 passing for 21 yards and 2 interceptions. Lester completed 2 of 4 passes for 85 yards. Jerrico Stubblefield had a catch for 43 yards.

On defense, Hull had 10 tackles and a fumble recovery, and Joey Bailey and Randy Pasch each had 11 tackles.

Volleyball improves by 2 games
The Lady Bulldogs won two more games last week, defeating Xenia Nazarene, 25–10, 23–25, 25–14 and 25–22, on Sept. 6, and Miami Valley on Sept. 8.

Monday’s match against Xenia Christian was canceled. The Lady ’Dogs are now 4–3.

Alisha Walker got a digging workout against Xenia. Walker, Ashlee Jackson, Crystal Reedy, Olivia Dixon, Bailey Linse, Niquelle Orr and Brittany Butler all scored for the Lady Bulldogs.

Against Miami Valley, Alisha Lucas, Jackson, Reedy, Ashanta Robinson, Dixon, Orr, Linse and Walker contributed to the scoring.

XC boys top Greeneview
The boys and girls cross country teams took two individual titles and a team title in twin meets against Greeneview held on the YSHS campus on Sept. 7. Starting in the YSHS athletic field and roaming the entire campus, the trio of Sam Borchers, Andy Peters and Ben Adams led the Bulldogs to a 26–29 victory over the Rams. Tina Peters won the girls race in 14:06.

Borchers won the two-mile race in 10:48. Andy Peters was second in 11:59. Adams finished fifth in 12:26, Matt Halm finished eighth in 13:51 and Earnest Johnson was 12th in 15:37.

A combined McKinney School boys and girls team beat Springfield Catholic Central in a dual meet, 23–33. Bulldogs Alexis Onfroy and Allison Berry were the individual winners.

Golfers win another match
The YSHS golf team beat Xenia Nazarene, 206–212, on Sept. 12. On Thursday, Sept. 8, the Bulldogs scored 214 to lose a trimatch to Middletown Christian (195) and Emmanuel Christian (206). The Bulldogs are 7–9.

Max Fleishman and Joe Fugate led the Bulldogs against Xenia, shooting 51 and 50, respectively. At the trimatch, Kevin Sikes-Gilbert shot 44.

Sports schedule changes
The YSHS girls soccer team will play a make-up game at Lynchburg-Clay on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The McKinney School volleyball team will play a regular home match against Xenia Christian on Saturday, Sept. 17, instead of the trimatch originally scheduled against Xenia Christian and Jefferson. The seventh-grade team plays at 9 a.m., followed by the eighth graders.

Girls basketball clinics

Basketball clinics for girls entering fourth through sixth grades are held Fridays, 6–7 p.m., in the Bryan Community Center gym.

The program provides instruction and skill building for girls new to basketball and those already participating in the program. The clinics complement the KTC (Kenton Trace Conference) traveling team program that includes four Yellow Springs teams of girls and boys in the fifth and sixth grades. Fourth graders are eligible to play on the fifth-grade teams. Teams form in November and the season starts in January. Interested players may register during the weekly clinics.
