Bulldog sports roundup

Football team wins opener
It took the YSHS football team eight games to win its first, and only, game last year. It’s a different story in 2005.

The Bulldogs won their opener last Friday, beating Cincinnati Christian, 22–15, on the road.

The game started well for the Bulldogs when Matt Hull returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately, it was called back on a penalty, but Hull would not back down. He later returned another kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. This one was not called back.

Hull had a great game, rushing for 92 yards in 16 carries plus 125 yards in kickoff returns. On defense, he had an interception. Joey Bailey scored with a five-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Anthony Carter threw a 47-yard touchdown to Jerrico Stubblefield. Andrew Ferguson kicked a 38-yard field goal. He also saved a possible touchdown on a kickoff by making a great open-field tackle.

The Bulldogs defense made a strong showing. Clayton Wolfe and Ian Ferguson led the defensive line while Josh Foster and Drew Stratton put heavy pressure on Cincinnati’s quarterback.

Girls soccer goes 1–1
The YSHS girls soccer team lost its season opener, 5–2, to Greeneview, on Tuesday, Aug. 23, but bounced back to win its first game of the year by beating Urbana, 5–2, on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Against Greeneview, Erin Silvert-Noftle scored the first goal for the Lady Bulldogs and assisted Tenia Scarver on the second. Goalie Sarah Morrison had 10 saves, while Jennifer Smith had one non-goalie save.

“Greeneview is a tough match to have as your first game, but the Lady Bulldogs played hard and was the first team to get on the board,” coach MacKenzie Reynolds said.

Against Urbana, Tenia Scarver scored the Lady Bulldogs’ first goal on an assist by Silvert-Noftle early in the game. Scarver scored again shortly after, followed by a goal by Megan Burrick. After Urbana cut the score to 3–2, the Lady Bulldogs’ Smith and Olivia Chen teamed up for 2 goals, giving YSHS a comfortable lead. Morrison had 5 saves in goal.

Boys soccer splits opening 2
The YSHS boys soccer team opened its 2005 fall season with a lackluster performance at Greeneview, falling to the Rams, 5–0, on Aug. 23.

After making adjustments to the lineup and putting in two solid training sessions, the Bulldogs showed that they still have some bite in them. They outshot the Urbana Hillclimbers, 31–3, and claimed their first victory of the young season, 4–1, Aug. 27.

Against Urbana, Ben Armstrong netted 2 goals for the Bulldogs, and David Suzel and Jake GunderKline had 1 each. Armstrong, James Butler and Andrew Ferguson each picked up 1 assist.

Volleyball team goes 1–2
The YSHS volleyball team ran into two tough teams at a trimatch on Saturday, Aug. 27, losing to Cedarville, 25–13 and 25–11, and Greenon, 25–18 and 25–19.

After that eye opener, the team went into Monday’s game against Jefferson ready to play, winning the match 25–15, 15–25 and 25–10.

Harriers place 7th in Centerville
The night life in Centerville proved to be a bit too wild for the Bulldogs last Saturday, Aug. 27, as the YSHS cross country team finished seventh in the first nighttime cross country meet in Ohio.

“Having a cross country meet at night is a novel idea,” coach Vince Peters said. “It had all the glitz and glamour of a packed stadium at a Friday night football game. The city had brought in scores of extra light towers to illuminate the course and people cheered along the entire route.”

Junior Sam Borchers, who finished eighth in the Division III state championship meet last year, ran a 5:02 first mile and had the race well in hand with less than 200 meters when he missed the final turn, costing him valuable time. He took second in 16:39, three seconds behind a runner from Eaton. A total of 78 runners finished the 5,000-meter course.

Senior Matt Halm and sophomores Ben Adams and Andy Peters had first race jitters. Peters placed 31st in 19:37, Adams 51st in 20:33, and Halm 72nd in 23:36. Freshman Earnest Johnson, who was running in his first cross country race, finished 76th in 25:18.

Senior Tina Peters, the only girl running for YSHS, turned in a fast 22:48 to place 17th of 76 runners.

20th Annual Village Fun Run

The 20th Annual Village Fun Run saw Coach David Johnston win for the5th consecutive year. The last time any one other than Johnston has won was way back in the last century - 1999 to be exact - when Grant Scott, just a sophomore at the time, won with an 11:27 clocking. Scott used that victory to soar to his first of three straight years as a State finalist in XC.

A youngster may be showing the talents to follow in the great Scott footsteps. Alexi Onfray, just an 8th grader, out-leaned Ohio HS State Mile Champ Sam Borchers at the tape to claim second place to Johnston. Both were timed in 11:53. Andy Peters was just a step behind in fourth with an 11:54 as the two HSers paced the talented 8th grader 'round the 2 mile course. Ben Adams filled out the top five places with a 12:12 finish.

Christina Haverfield, was the first female finisher. The Sidney HS XC coach and member of the Miami Valley TC was 7th overall in 12:24. Susan Randall, a 30 year old with the Miami Valley TC, was 2nd in 13:51, with YSHS senior Tina Peters 3rd in 13:56.

Runner-up in the junior high competition was 7th grader Gabe Anrhein. He placed 14th overall in 13:35. The top junior high girl was Allison Berry, a seventh grader. Berry placed 21st overall in 15:30.

The top Mills Lawn runners were Lois Miller, a 5th grader, in 16:22 for the girls and Fielding Lewis for the boys. Fielding was 27th overall in 17:27. Young Keenan Onfray won the 3rd grade and younger competition with a gutsy 34th place finish in 20:54.
