Golfers showing improvement

In its second match of the season on Wednesday, Aug. 17, the Yellow Springs High School golf team racked a score of 200, too high to beat Cedarville, which had 165. Kevin Sikes and Alex Visbal led the Bulldogs with scores of 45 and 49, respectively.

The Bulldogs’ match against Ridgeville Christian the following day was canceled due to a lack of Ridgeville players. The results from the quad match on Monday, Aug. 22, were not available by presstime and will be published in next week’s News.

The team is steadily improving, dropping team and individual scores with each match, coach Seth Bothwell said. With 11 golfers on the roster, most of whom are new to the team, the Bulldogs have the potential to develop into a competitive golf team, Bothwell said.

Girls hoops clinics

Basketball clinics for girls entering fourth through sixth grades are held Fridays, 6–7 p.m., in the Bryan Community Center gym.

The program is designed to provide instruction and skill building for girls new to basketball and those already participating in the program. Each clinic will consist of fundamentals instruction and drills, dribbling and shooting games and scrimmages.

The clinics complement the KTC (Kenton Trace Conference) traveling team program that includes four Yellow Springs teams of girls and boys in the fifth and sixth grades. Fourth graders are eligible to play on the fifth-grade teams. Teams form in November and the season starts in January. Interested players may register onsite.

Changes to XC schedule

Several meets were added to the fall schedule of the YSHS and McKinney School cross-country teams.

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Bulldogs will host a meet against Greeneview and Springfield Catholic. The meet starts at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, the YSHS varsity and JV teams will travel to the Alliance Invitational at the Miami Valley Tech Center in Englewood.

The location of the Saturday, Sept. 10, has not yet been determined.

20th annual Village Fun Run

All runners, joggers and walkers may participate in the 20th annual Village Fun Run on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m. The two-mile run through town will start and finish at the Yellow Springs High School track.

Following tradition, the winners of the run will receive watermelons and all runners who finish will receive refreshments and other awards. Age groups for awards will be kindergarten and younger; first through third grade; fourth through sixth grade; middle school; high school; open; and master men’s and women’s categories in five-year divisions.

The race is also a chance for the village to meet the 2005 YSHS and McKinney school cross country teams. Proceeds from the $3 donation to run in the race will be used to fund the cross country team’s activities this fall.

The cross country teams will hold a mandatory parental meeting with coach Vince Peters before the race at 6 p.m.

Runners at McKinney and YSHS may still join this year’s squad. Boys and girls interested in competing should contact Coach Peters at 767-7424.
