OBITUARIES

Bradford Lee Jones

Bradford Lee Jones of Yellow Springs died Friday, Aug. 19, at Greene Memorial Hospital. He was 66.

He was born Jan. 2, 1939, in Columbus, Ind. Brad resided in Yellow Springs since 1982. He and his wife, Joyce McDonald, were married on June 1, 2001. They shared a love of long walks, camping, dinner with friends and the opera. Their love of opera led them to Dayton, Cincinnati, Houston and, especially, the Metropolitan Opera. They loved to invite family and friends to join them on their frequent trips to New York.

He graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor of fine arts in product design in 1965. His entire working life was devoted to the disciplines of city planning and design, and he had recently retired from his position with the city of Columbus department of development after 30 years.

Brad had many friends, and his kindness, his gentle spirit, and his sense of humor were appreciated by all.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce McDonald; his children, Alyssa Jones and Christopher Jones; a stepdaughter, Elena Kwan; and his sisters, Marcia Schmidt and Melodi Lewis.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, 3 p.m., at the Jackson Lytle Williams Maley Funeral Home in Yellow Springs. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Buckeye Trail Association, American Cancer Society or Miami Township Fire-Rescue.

Mabel Agnes Alexander

Mabel Agnes Alexander of Yellow Springs died Saturday, Aug. 20, at Friends Care Community. She was 75.

She was born Oct. 20, 1929, in Enon, the daughter of Herman J. and Mabel Lindenmuth Schulte. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Ladies of Columbia and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul William Alexander, on March 2, 2005; a son, Timothy Lee Alexander; a granddaughter, Erica Cornwell; three brothers, Bernard Schulte, Bud Schulte and Russell “Ray” Schulte; and a sister, Louise Rinker.

She is survived by two children and their spouses, Kim Louise and Paul Cimarata of Olathe, Kan., and Terrence Lee and Darlene Alexander of Springfield; two grandchildren, Ben Alexander of Portland, Ore., and Kristen Sikorski, Olathe, Kan.; three great-grandchildren, Jaclyn Cornwell, Catherine Cornwell and Rachel Cornwell; a brother and sister-in-law, Herman J. and Alice Schulte Jr. of Oakwood; and several nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial was held Wednesday, Aug. 24, at St. Paul Catholic Church, with burial in St. Paul Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Neeld Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Steven Craig Stanley

Steven Craig Stanley of Xenia died Saturday, Aug. 13. He was 43.

He was born July 20, 1962, the son of Taylor Neal and Marilyn (Bowermaster) Stanley.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, graduate of Greene Vocational School, Harley enthusiast and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Beavercreek. He was a devoted husband and father.

He is survived by his wife, Denice M. (Troskowski) Stanley, whom he married July 1, 1989; five children, Samantha, Krysta, Michael, Shana Nicole and Joshua Taylor; his father, T. Neal Stanley of Xenia; mother and stepfather, Marilyn and Greg Thomas of Texas; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Brian and Robin of Texas, Kevin and Lisa of Tennessee, Aaron and Betty of Xenia, and Shawn and Becky of Jamestown; grandparents, Genevieve Bowermaster of Xenia and Lula Pearl Stanley of Yellow Springs.

Services were held Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Beavercreek, with burial following in Grape Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a Stanley family memorial fund that has been established at Security National Bank. McColaugh Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Todd P. Tyler

Todd P. Tyler of Enon died Tuesday, Aug. 9. He was 45.

He graduated from Fairborn-Baker High School and was the owner of T/T Framing for the past 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald P. Tyler.

He is survived by his mother, Esther Tyler of Yellow Springs; his wife, Lisa (Strouse) Tyler; stepdaughter, Meagan Ashley; son, Donald B. Tyler; siblings and their spouses, Jody and Jim Butz of Hilliard and Jill and Tom McDaniels of Sunbury; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 19, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Fairborn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton, the American Cancer Society or Greene Memorial Hospital’s Oncology Department.

Joyce Smithson

Joyce (Overs) Smithson of Springfield died Sunday, Aug. 14, in Eaglewood Care Center. She was 71.

She was born July 21, 1934, in Springfield. She worked at the IOOF Home for over 25 years before retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Champion Aerie 397 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 536.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Smithson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Roger Burga of Yellow Springs and Jill and Scott Puderbaugh of Springfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Patty White of Springfield and James and Carol White of Springfield; four grandchildren, Tiffany of Fairborn, Kelly, Corey, and Nicholas, all of Springfield; a great-granddaughter, Tiana; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Littleton & Rue Funeral Home, with burial following in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Josie Ann Pruitt

Josie Ann Pruitt of Springfield died Tuesday, Aug. 16, in Dayspring Health Care Center. She was 61.

She was born in Paintsville, Ky., the daughter of Rev. Jack Jr. and Grace Marie (Baldridge) Pruitt. Josie was a member of Freewill Baptist Church and attended Wright State, Clark State Community College and Wittenberg. She retired as a contract specialist with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Charles Gene and Floyd Darrell Pruitt.

She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Arbutis and Thurman Ray Jenkins of Yellow Springs; nieces and nephews, Sherre, Peggy, Dana, Regina and Lisa, and Ronnie, Timothy and Charles; and an aunt, Beechie Baarders.

Services were held Thursday, Aug. 18, in the Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home, with entombment in the Rose Hill Mausoleum.

Mary Carlisle

Mary Charlene Carlisle died Wednesday, Aug. 17. She was 61.

She graduated from Bryan High School in Yellow Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward S. and Ruth Ellen Carlisle; a brother, Don; and two nephews, Andrew and Dan.

She is survived by her special friend of 25 years, Margaret Ottesen; two sons, Jon and George Ottesen; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Elaine Carlisle; nephews Christopher and Patrick Carlisle; several grandnephews, a grandniece, cousins and two aunts.

A memorial mass was held on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Monroe. Memorial donations may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
