Week 5 in Major League baseball

By Bob Morrison

The Orioles played two more exhibition games this week. On Saturday they played the Reds close all the way, scoring 2 in the third and 4 in the fourth, but came up short 7–6. Nicky Sontag was 2 for 3 with a stolen base and a run scored; Carl Wiener was 2 for 3 with 2 stolen bases and a run scored; Bryan Smith, in his last game of the year, played well at first base and hit a single. Elliott Snay got hit by a ground ball in the third but stayed in the game and went 2 for 3 and scored twice. That boy is truly a gamer. Kenneth Sonner started for the Reds and got the win.

The second game on Saturday, the A’s against Indians, was called because of lightning.

Two superb games were played on Sunday. In the first, the Cubs had the mighty Yankees reeling, on the ropes and in shock. They were ahead 7–0 in the third, then the Yankees chipped away at the lead but were still losing, 9–7, in the last inning.

Alexis Onfroy-Curley came back from vacation and shut out the Yanks for two innings with help from some nifty defensive work by the infield, including a great catch of a pop fly by Sam Morrison with his back to the ball running into the outfield. But Onfroy-Curley wilted in the heat and had to give way to Morrison in the fifth. Shaquil Collett was a vacuum cleaner at third base; Kyle Click was awesome at the plate; Tyler Fox was the field general behind the plate. Brock and Jacob GunderKline continued to have hot bats; Geoffrey Pitts and Kelsey Fox played solidly in the outfield.

The Yankees finally got on the scoreboard in the third with walks to Eamon Papania, John Reimers and Lucas Donnell, and doubles by Andrew Ferguson and Asa Casenhiser. The Cubs added another run in the fourth but the Yanks countered with 3 runs on hits by Yosef Johnson and Addison Pettiford and a walk to Alex Beers. John Reimers then hit one up the middle, Anthony Pettiford doubled to bring the Yanks to within a run, 8–7. The Cubs scored 1 more run in their final at-bat to lead 9–7. Yankee pride and determination prevailed in the end, however, as Conor Stratton and Donnell reached safety and Fergie doubled to the right, scoring Stratton. Casenhiser doubled down the right field line to end the game in dramatic fashion. The Yanks remain unbeaten.

In the final game of the week the Reds beat the Indians on the strength of pitching by Jacob Fugate, Cole Honeycutt and Sonner and solid defense of Ethan Brown, Matt Finn and an unassisted double play by Kevin Sikes-Gilbert. The Reds bats made a lot of noise with Finn hitting a ball to the fence, missing a home run by only a few feet. Those of us watching watched in amazement as that ball sailed to the fence.

Come out to the ballpark this weekend. We’ll have hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, candy, ice cream, music, decorations in honor of Independence Day, lots of baseball and lots of fun. See you there.

Bulldogs split 2

By Karen Wintrow

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs lost a rematch to Patterson Park Raiders at home, 6–4. The Bulldogs were much stronger this time around, except for the second inning, when errors by the ’Dogs allowed the Raiders to score 4 runs.

Jarrett Moon pitched well for five innings and Ethan Brown shut down six straight batters in relief. But the Bulldogs were sluggish on offense. The team’s runs were scored by Jerimiha Stubblefield, Andrew Ferguson, Anthony Pettiford and Jamie Kitzmiller.

Fans saw the best of the Bulldogs on Thursday at Gaunt Park. A nearly flawless defense, superb pitching and active bats gave the Bulldogs a 9–1 victory over Pinewood 2.

In his best outing to date, Brown pitched his first complete game. First baseman Pettiford caught every ball that came his way, including a perfect throw from Matt Finn at third and a pop fly that allowed him to double up the runner at first.

The game ended in the fifth when Finn crossed the plate on a wild pitch from the third of Pinewood’s hard-throwing pitchers.

The Bulldogs begin tournament play on Friday, July 1, at Howell Field in Dayton. The team’s last home game is Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m., at Gaunt Park.
