Bulldogs lose two of three
By Karen Wintrow
It was a full week of baseball for the Yellow Springs
Bulldogs, the traveling baseball team.
Tuesday’s home game versus Westwood was a nail
biter down to the last out, but it ended well, with a 15–13 victory
for the Bulldogs. After allowing 6 runs in the first inning, starting
pitcher Lucas Donnell found his groove and pitched three excellent innings.
Jarrett Moon was strong in relief. In a blowout third, the Bulldogs scored
11 runs on singles from Jack Daily, Asa Casenhiser, Jeremy Paul and walks
from the rest of the lineup.
On Thursday, the Bulldogs did not come ready to play
against a Tipp City Redhawk team that performed like a well-oiled machine.
Ethan Brown pitched three strong innings, but the Redhawk bats came out
in the fourth when they scored 7 runs. The Redhawks were strong again
in the fifth inning, scoring 6 more runs. The Bulldog offense never got
going, contributing to the loss. For the Bulldogs, Tarren Finch, Donnell,
Conor Stratton and Daily hit singles and Daily and Brown hit doubles.
The game ended with a Redhawks win, 15–4.
Rain forced a cancellation of Saturday’s game,
and it was off to Tipp City for a rematch with the Redhawks Sunday afternoon.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 4-run lead but the Bulldogs
answered with 2 runs in the second on a double from Moon and a 2 RBI hit
from Donnell. Donnell relieved Moon in the third and was able to shut
down the Redhawks for two innings. The Bulldogs had a productive fourth,
scoring 3 runs on a single from Moon, a double from Tarren Finch, a towering
triple from Jerimiha Stubblefield and a timely RBI from Jamie Kitzmiller.
They came back in the fifth to score 2 more runs on singles from Moon
and Brown. Unfortunately, the Redhawks offense exploded in the fifth when
they scored 8 runs, bringing the final score to Bulldogs 7, Redhawks 15.

Week three in the Majors
By Bob Morrison
On June 4 the Reds lost to the As, but A.J. Wagner
made a phenomenal play, Melanie Rudolf did some heads-up base running,
and Kenneth Sonner pitched another dependable relief appearance. Joe Fugate
provided stability and leadership behind the plate. The Reds then beat
the A’s the next day. Cole Honeycutt pitched a complete game, showing
great composure throughout. The defense supported him as well for an exciting
team victory.
Cubs win! Cubs win! Well, sort of. The Cubs came out
on top of a two-inning, unofficial game that included 24 walks, beating
the As 15–13. Sam Morrison got the win with strong relief work by
Austin Pence and Alexis Onfroy-Curley. Jerimiha Stubblefield started and
took the loss for the As.
When the Indians played a scrimmage against the Reds
on Saturday, a good time was had by all. In the second game the Yankees
beat the Athletics 6–5. The As were ahead until the Yanks pulled
it out in the bottom of the sixth. There were late hits from Ian Wimberly,
Lucas Donnell and Addison Pettiford to bring the Yankees to within one
run. Conor Stratton pitched five innings for the Yanks but got no decision.
Wimberly got the win in relief by pitching a scoreless sixth. In the bottom
of the sixth, Asa Casenhiser got on with a walk, stole second and scored
on a hit by Andrew Ferguson, who advanced to second on the throw to the
plate. Fergie then stole third and scored the winning run on the errant
throw.
On Sunday two games took place simultaneously. The
Indians beat the As and the Yankees defeated the Reds. Stephanie Lloyd,
Kevin Greco, Isaac Haller, Matt Salazar and Jacob Trumbull led the Indians
to victory. Lloyd showed great poise at first with a tremendous grab.
Will Turner started for the As but had to leave the mound with a sore
arm. The relief corps gave up 17 walks. Austin Bailey caught a stellar
game. Scoring for the As were Stubblefield, Turner, Bailey and Brandon
Semler. Lucas Blanchard-Gleuckert and Alex Nickels played excellent defense.
Katie Nickels got her first major league hit for the play of the game!
Offensive stars for the Yanks were Anthony Pettiford,
Rafael and Stratton, who also pitched a complete game, giving up just
1 hit and 2 runs. Stars for the Reds were Joe Fugate, Ben Clonch, Jacob
Fugate, Jesse Jewell, Ethan Brown, Josh Meadows and Marty Scherr.
