Boys track league champs
With five first-place finishes and five second-place finishes,
the YSHS boys track team won its first Metro Buckeye Conference title
since 2001 during the league meet last Friday at Troy Christian.
The Bulldogs topped the conference’s six other
teams with 148 points. Runner-up Troy had 142 points and third-place finisher
Jefferson garnered 100 points.
Strong starts and confident leads earned sophomore
Sam Borchers the winning ticket in the 800, which he ran in 2:03.3, and
the 1600, which he finished in 4:34.9. Borchers also ran the anchor leg
for the winning 3200 relay. The team also included Jeremy Upton, David
Warren and Evan Gerthoffer. Upton, who had been recovering from an injury,
won the 400 in 54.6.
Andy Peters placed first in the 3200 in 11:08.1, while
Bradley Benning-Clark rounded out the team’s first-place finishes,
winning the high jump with a leap of six feet.
Warren, who was recognized by the league for good sportsmanship,
placed second, just behind the winners, in both the 1600 and the 3200.
Issa Walker placed second in the high jump with a leap of five feet eight
inches, and Benning-Clark dashed to second place in the 300 hurdles. Peters
placed second in the pole vault.
The Bulldogs garnered third-place finishes in the 400
relay (Benning-Clark, Anthony Carter, Walker and Matt Hull) and the 800
relay (Carter, Hull, Caleb Keller-Pitstick and Walker). John Pamplin took
third place in the discus as well.
Fourth-place finishes were turned in by Pamplin in
the shot put, Carter in the long jump and the 200, and Gerthoffer in the
800. Ben Adams also competed for the Bulldogs.
The YSHS girls team placed sixth in the MBC meet with
31 points. Troy Christian won with 180 points. Leading the Bulldogs was
Tina Peters, who placed first in the 1600 in 5:52, second in the 3200
in 13:34 and third in the 800. Carly Bailey added a fourth place finish
in the long jump and tied for fourth in the high jump.
Head coaches John Gudgel and Vince Peters and assistant
coaches David Johnston and Schelle Crosswhite will watch their team compete
in the Division III district championship on Saturday, May 21, beginning
at 11 a.m., at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. The regionals will take place
Wednesday, May 25, and Friday, May 27, at Piqua High School.
Tennis team falls in tourney
The YSHS tennis team went to the Division II sectional tournament
at Troy last week with only half its roster and had a tough time advancing
beyond the first round.
Singles player Jesse Rothman defeated a player from
Northeastern, 6–1, 6–0 in the qualifier round on Tuesday,
May 10. Rothman then lost, 6–1, 6–1, in the second round to
the third seed from Sidney Lehman on Thursday. Carey Dixon got a bye in
the first round of the singles bracket and lost to a Lehman player in
the second round, 6–0, 6–0. Mori Rothman lost in the first
round, 7–6 (7–4), 6–4, to a player from Kenton Ridge.
The Bulldogs’ doubles team of Alex Turner and
Erin Silvert-Noftle played a Lehman team in the first round and went up
5–4 to serve for the first set but were unable to pull it out. Turner
and Silvert-Noftle lost the match, 7–5, 6–2. The other doubles
team, Laura Garcia and Emile Fleming, defeated a team from Southeastern,
6–2, 3–6, 6–2, in the first round, but lost, 6–0,
6–0, in the second to Southeastern’s No. 2 seeds.
The Bulldogs had a successful year, ending the season
12–5. Next year’s team will benefit from a high number of
returning players and several up-and-coming freshmen, coach Allen McCullough
said.
Baseball team loses in tourney
The YSHS baseball team lost 10–0 to Newton last Tuesday,
May 10 in the Division IV Dayton district tournament.
The Bulldogs canceled their originally scheduled game
against Middletown that day and got rained out on Thursday, May 12, when
they were scheduled to play Ridgeville Christian. The team rescheduled
an away game against Ridgeville on Tuesday, May 17. The Bulldogs were
4–12 before the last game.
Softball rained out
The YSHS softball team was also rained out last Thursday and
Friday, May 12 and 13, when the Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play Ridgeville
Christian and Emmanuel Christian. The game against Ridgeville was rescheduled
for Tuesday, May 17. The game against Emmanuel was canceled.
Miami Valley Track Club starts summer practices
The Miami Valley Track Club will hold practices for
the summer season Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6–8 p.m., at
the YSHS track. Club members must be 8 or older during 2005.
The track club has been providing the opportunity for
young people of the Yellow Springs and surrounding communities to participate
in the National Junior Olympic programs since 1982. Membership in the
club costs $35. Athletes are responsible for individual meet entry fees.
