Baseball team wins 2 more
A baseball team without strong pitching has its fate sealed. The YSHS baseball team dealt this blow to both its opponents last week, beating Jefferson, 12–4, on Tuesday, May 3, and blowing out Miami Valley 32–12 the following day. The Bulldogs are now 4–11.

Against Jefferson (7–9), the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2–0 lead on a Jake Fulton single. Clayton Wolfe then hit into a triple play to end the rally. The Broncos scored 3 in the bottom of the inning.

The ’Dogs came back with 2 in the second and then 3 more in the third, highlighted by Todd Sheets’s steal of home. An Aaron Willis double started a 2-run rally in the fourth.

Todd Sheets had 3 hits. Fulton and Yosef Johnson each had 2. Fulton was the winning pitcher, allowing only 4 hits, issuing no walks and striking out 14.

The winless Miami Valley Rams came to town to face Cody Johnson in his first ever start as a pitcher. Johnson held the Rams scoreless in the first, while the Dogs scored 6 runs with the help of hits by Johnson, Alex Wambaugh and Andrew Stillwell-Current. Johnson ran into control problems the next inning and was relieved by Fulton. An error and 4 Ram hits brought in 7 runs.

Down 7–6, the Bulldogs pounded out 5 straight hits: doubles by Fulton and Kilan Brown, a Johnson triple and singles by Wambaugh and Wolfe. When the smoke cleared the ’Dogs had taken an 18–7 lead. The Bulldogs scored seven more times in the third, highlighted by Wambaugh’s home run to left.

Wambaugh had 4 hits and 5 RBI, while Brown had 3 hits and 5 RBI. Johnson, Fulton and Kyle Truitt all had 3 hits. Ian Ferguson, Andrew Ferguson, Stillwell-Current and Zach Reichert all had “perfect” days at bat.

The Bulldogs played their first tournament game on Tuesday, May 10, against the fourth-seeded Newton.

Tennis team closes season 12–5
The YSHS tennis team finished a strong regular season last week, falling to Miami Valley’s A team, 3–2, on Tuesday, May 3, soundly beating Xenia Christian, 5–0, on May 6 and then bowing 4–1 to a mature Waynesville team.

The Bulldogs enter the Division II Troy sectional tournament this week with a record of 12–5.

Against Miami Valley, Mori Rothman lost 6–2, 6–1 at first singles, as did Erin Silvert-Noftle at third singles. Alex Turner, trying his hand at singles for the first time this year, had his match of the season before losing 6–4, 6–1. The first doubles team of Jesse Rothman and Carey Dixon won 6–4, 6–1, and the second doubles team of Scott Keyes and Nick Rittenhouse won 6–2, 6–4.

The Bulldogs dropped just 7 games to Xenia on Friday. Mori Rothman, Dixon and Jesse Rothman won their singles matches, while Keyes and Rittenhouse took first doubles and Alex Turner and Erin Silvert-Noftle won second doubles. Emile Fleming and Laura Garcia won a reserve pro-set, 8–1.

The match against Waynesville (11–3) was tougher. Duncan Silvert-Noftle took a close 3–6, 6–7(5–7) loss with several match points. Mori Rothman lost at second singles, and Jesse Rothman had the only win, 6–0, 6–1. He finishes the season 13–1. The first doubles team of Rittenhouse and Fleming lost, while second doubles Turner and Erin Silvert-Noftle lost in three sets 6–4, 5–7, 4–6.

The Bulldogs enter the tournament without its seniors Duncan Silvert-Noftle, Keyes, Rittenhouse and Paia LaPalombara, who are away on the YSHS senior trip. Preliminaries for singles started on Tuesday, May 10, and Wednesday, May 11, while the tournament began Thursday. Singles matches will be held at Troy Community Park, and doubles are held at Troy High School.

First singles player Mori Rothman plays Kenton Ridge in a qualifier on Wednesday before Thursday’s first-round match against Greenon. If he wins he will play the No. 1 player from Cedarville. At second singles, Dixon got a bye in the first round and awaits the winner of Sidney Lehman and Catholic Central on Thursday. Jesse Rothman plays a qualifier Tuesday against a Northeasterner, and if he wins he’ll face the No. 3 seed from Lehman in the first round.

Turner and Erin Silvert-Noftle play Sidney Lehman in first doubles on Thursday, and if they win, they face the winner of Central Catholic/Cedarville. Garcia and Fleming play Southeastern in the first round Thursday, and if they win they face the second seed.

The semifinals and finals will be held on Saturday, May 14, at the same locations. Each player or team must win at least three regular rounds to reach the semis.
