Bulldog sports roundup

Baseball teams lose first 2
Heavy rains last week postponed the start of the YSHS baseball season, but the new drainage system installed at Gaunt Park by the Village, coupled with sunshine, made it possible to play last Tuesday’s home opener against National Trail. Unfortunately, visiting pitcher Randy Kerns tossed a 12-strikeout no-hitter, and the Bulldogs lost 12–0.

Things looked brighter on Wednesday at Catholic Central. Freshman Kumar Jensen led off the game with a single to right and scored on Nick Huneck’s triple to center field. Jake Fulton hit a single to score Huneck. However, five errors by the Bulldogs and other miscues led to 9 Irish runs in the bottom of the first. Yellow Springs ended the game on the bottom of a 16–2 score.

Friday the junior varsity team hosted Troy Christian. Pitching woes and 15 walks put the ’Dogs in trouble, but there were bright spots. Yosef Johnson, Zach Reichart and Andrew Stillwell-Current all recorded their first career hits. Todd Sheets had a perfect day at bat, scored twice and pitched one scoreless inning. Drew Stratton got on base during his three at-bats and stole 2 bases. The Bulldogs lost 18–7.

Tennis team off to rough start
The co-ed Yellow Springs tennis team had a tough opener last week when four of the top players either were injured or away for spring break. On Tuesday, March 29, the Bulldogs lost 3–2 to a Cedarville team they shut out last year. Yellow Springs played Greenview the next day and lost 3–2, an improvement over last year’s score of 0–5.

Against Cedarville, Scott Keyes played a tight net game for an easy first singles victory of 6–4, 6–4. Keyes used clean forehand shots to hold the lead for most of the game. Wes Richeson stepped up to second singles and lost 1–6, 3–6 to a consistent Cedarville player. Third singles was a breeze for Nick Rittenhouse, whose tenacious intensity won him a 6–1, 6–2 victory and the nickname “warhorse.”

The first doubles team of Paia LaPalombara and Laura Garcia beat themselves with early season errors. They lost 2–6, 3–6. Second doubles players Emile Fleming and Alex Turner, both freshmen and relatively new to tennis, lost a respectable 3–6, 2–6 match.

First singles player Carey Dixon returned for Wednesday’s match against Greenview and won 6–4, 6–1. Keyes got four games in each set but went under 6–4, 6–4 at second singles, followed by LaPalombara, who lost a double bagel at third. Duncan Silvert-Noftle, who still has a shin injury from soccer, played a strong second doubles match with Rittenhouse, and they hammered their opponents, 6–1, 6–2. Turner and Garcia lost at second doubles, 6–4, 6–2.

Track season opens at home
The YSHS girls and boys track teams hosted a tri-meet with Wayne and Xenia High Schools last Wednesday, March 30. The boys team came in second with 45 points, just ahead of Xenia (42) and behind Wayne (73). The girls team finished third with 6 points, far behind Wayne’s 64 and Xenia’s 69 points.

The boys meet at Versailles last Saturday was canceled due to inclement weather.

Sam Borchers finished first in three events, taking the 1600-meter run in 4:51 and the 3200 run in 10:45. Borchers also anchored the 3200 relay, which also included Jeremy Upton, David Warren and Matt Halm, and they won in 9:18. Warren also took first in the 800 in 2:14.

Brad Benning-Clark gained two first-place titles in the high jump, in which he leaped six feet two inches, and in a quick 43.8 finish in the 300-meter hurdles. John Pamplin won the discus with a throw of 121 feet 11 inches.

Matt Hull finished second in the 100 meters in 12.1. Upton placed second in the 800 in 2:15.6. The 400 relay team (Benning-Clark, Anthony Carter, Issa Walker and Hull) placed third, and Upton took fourth in the long jump. Caleb Keller, Andy Peter, Carter and Pamplin all had fifth-place finishes in other events, while solid performances were also turned in by Ben Adams, Jacquan Brewton, Keith Brewton and Dan Noll.

Tina Peters and Carly Bailey were the only competitors for the girls team. Peters placed third in the 800 in 2:59.9 and 1600 meter in 6:38. Bailey placed third in the high jump with a leap of four feet seven inches.
