OBITUARIES
Paul ‘Bill’ Alexander
Paul W. “Bill” Alexander of Yellow Springs
died Wednesday, March 2, at Friends Care Community. He was 80.
He was born June 29, 1924, in Yellow Springs, the son
of Charles M. and Beatrice Heider Alexander. He was a longtime employee
of the Yellow Springs Board of Education and St. Paul Cemetery. He was
a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, a member of the American Legion
and a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers,
Ed and Joe Alexander; a son, Timothy Lee Alexander, and granddaughter,
Erica Cornwell.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes (Schulte) Alexander,
whom he married on April 3, 1948; children, Terrence Lee and Darlene Alexander
of Springfield and Kim Louise and Paul Camarata of Olathe, Kan.; grandchildren,
Ben Alexander of Portland, Ore., and Kristen Sikorski of Olathe, Kan.;
great-grandchildren, Jaclyn Cornwell, Catherine Cornwell and Rachel Cornwell;
and brothers and sisters, Jack, James, Don and Patty Alexander, all of
Yellow Springs, and Clara Belval of Hyde Park, Vt.
A mass of Christian burial was held Monday, March 7,
at St. Paul Church, with burial following in St. Paul Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
Alice M. Cummins
Alice M. Cummins of Fairborn died Saturday, March 5,
in Greene Oaks in Xenia. She was 85.
Born on Nov. 7, 1919, in Dayton, she was the daughter
of Frank and Hulda (King) Tenney. She was the co-owner of Cummins Waste
Collection
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Jr.,
in 1981; a son, Joseph III; daughter, Barbara; granddaughter, Amber Sonntag;
a brother, Norman Tenney; and two sisters, Josephine and Phyllis.
She is survived by children, Lawrence and Judy Cummins
of Beavercreek, Robert and Virginia Cummins of Fairborn and Donna and
Peter Sonntag of Yellow Springs; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren;
and a sister, Shirley Goff of Texas.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 8, in the
Belton Funeral Home in Fairborn, with burial following in Fairfield Cemetery
in Fairborn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association or Hospice of Dayton.
Carl Wayne Day
Carl Wayne Day died Wednesday, Feb. 23, at Greene Memorial
Hospital, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 62.
Born on Oct. 7, 1942, in Dunbar, Va., he was the son
of Charles and Louise Day. Carl worked for Morris Bean and Company for
40 years.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sharon (Patrick)
Day, their children, Barbara Day and Phil Brannum, Richard and Tina Day,
and Ronald and Karen Day; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
sisters, Brenda Kohler, Betty Livingston, and Debbie Day; and a brother,
Gary Day.
A memorial service and inurnment were held at the convenience
of the family.
Henry ‘Scrap’ Riley
Henry “Scrap” Riley of Springfield died
unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 28, in Community Hospital. He was 80.
He was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Henry
and Stella (Miller) Riley Sr. Henry served in the United States Marine
Corps, receiving many medals, including a Purple Heart in 1945. He was
a member of union Local 660 for 30 years, was superintendent of construction
for many local companies and project representative for the Ohio architects
office, and most recently worked as field representative for Steven Sharpe,
retiring in 2000. He had a witty sense of humor and enjoyed playing cards
and bingo and loved animals and birds.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Juanita
Williams; and brother, Don Riley.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Eleanor (Saunders)
Riley; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Carol Riley of Springfield
and Rich Riley of Kentucky; stepchildren, Tom and Rosa Cooney of La Mesa,
Calif., Chris Cooney of Yellow Springs, and Sally and Robert Wilson of
Springfield; sister, Isabell Johnson of Springfield; eight grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
At Henry’s request, there will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Clark County Humane
Society, 5201 Urbana Road, Springfield, 45502. The family is being served
by the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home in Springfield.
Patricia Powderly Morrow
Patricia Powderly Morrow died Sunday, Feb. 20, due to
complications from surgery at Greene Memorial Hospital. Her preacher and
a friend were by her side when she died. She was 64.
Patricia was born and raised in Rochester, N.Y. Shortly
after graduating from Nazareth College, she took her first job as a feature
writer for the Democrat & Chronicle in Rochester. After four
years, she relocated to Dayton, where she worked as a journalist for the
Dayton Daily News from 1965 to 1967. She wrote everything from feature
articles for the “Women’s World” section to restaurant
reviews. Her columns were lively and witty and full of humor, no
matter what the subject matter.
Patricia moved to Yellow Springs in the 1970s, where
she raised her two children. Since that time, she traveled the United
States, continuing her work as a journalist and also working as a teacher,
in public relations and as a theater manager, to name a few of her varied
interests.
Patricia returned to Yellow Springs two years ago to
be near family. She worked at Joe Holly’s Cleaners for the past
14 months. In addition, she also spent much of 2004 lobbying for the Democratic
Party, indulging her favorite hobby, landscaping, and spending time exploring
her spirituality by visiting new churches.
Patricia’s death was quick and unexpected. She
will be dearly missed by her friends.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, Feb. 23, at
Edwardsville Cemetery in Clarksville.
Memorial service for Bev Viemeister
A memorial service for Beverly Lipsett Viemeister will
be held Saturday, March 12, 2 p.m., in the Glen Helen Building. A reception
will follow.
Bev died on Monday, Feb. 21, at the age of 78. She
asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Yellow Springs
Community Foundation.
