Swimmer places 20th at District
Eve GunderKline was the only YSHS swimmer to
advance to the Southwestern District swim meet at Miami University on
Saturday, Feb. 19. GunderKline was seeded 24th in a field of 24 swimmers
in the 100 breaststroke. She finished in 20th place, dropping over two
seconds from her previous personal-best time and finishing the race in
1:19.46.
Coaches Dave Wishart and Abby Guiler indicated that
they had hoped she would break the 1:20 mark and she did, swimming a tactically
smart race. “She went out strong for the first 25 yards and didn’t
back off at all for rest of the race, passing several swimmers in the
last 35 yards,” Wishart said.
For GunderKline, a homeschooled junior, qualifying
for districts this year means that she can only get better in her senior
year and is likely to return to districts in this or other events next
season, Wishart said.
The Yellow Springs girls and boys teams had very good
seasons, he said.
