GunderKline advances to districts In the boys and girls swimming sectional competitions last week, junior Eve GunderKline was the only Yellow Springs swimmer to advance to the Feb. 19 Division II district meet at Miami University. GunderKline swam a personal best time of 1:22.11 in the 100 breaststroke to finish 11th in the race and snag the 24th spot at the district meet. She is the first swimmer from Yellow Springs to advance to districts since 2002. “Getting to districts is always our goal and we made it this year for the first time since 2002,” coach Dave Wishart said. “Eve deserves enormous credit for all the hard work she has put in over the last year.” It was a score of personal best times for the rest of the Bulldogs who competed in the sectional meets at Wittenberg on Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12. The YSHS boys team placed 8th among 21 teams with 112 points. Springfield North won the meet with 329 points. Outscoring their team total for the last several years, the YSHS girls finished last in the 22-team field with 19 points. Kettering Alter won the girls competition with 305.5 points. Coaches Wishart and Abby Guiler were especially pleased with all the best times their swimmers achieved over the weekend. “They did great, these kids really swam their hearts out,” Wishart said. The boys 200 medley relay team (Jacob Wishart, Peter Lovering, Michael Hosket and Evan Gerthoffer) posted their best time of the season, 2:01.92, to place eighth. The 200 freestyle relay (Hosket, Brandon Carver-Halley, Carey Dixon and Lovering) finished ninth. In the last event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay team (Wishart, Will McCuddy, Gerthoffer and Hosket) finished fourth in 3:49.38, a drop of nine seconds from their previous best time. In individual competition, swimming in the 200 freestyle were Wishart, who finished ninth, followed by McCuddy in 12th and Gerthoffer in 14th place, each competitor achieving personal best times. Dixon, coming off of a cold, finished 25th in the same event. Hosket, Gerthoffer and Lovering had solid performances in the 50 freestyle finishing 17th, 18th, and 31st, respectively, out of 68 swimmers. Wishart and McCuddy finished sixth and seventh in the 500 freestyle, each with personal best times, Wishart dropping 15 seconds and McCuddy dropping 13 seconds. Carver-Halley had another personal best time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing 21st, followed by Lovering in 22nd place out of 48 swimmers. Faster times continued for the girls on Saturday as the 200 medley relay team (Miriam Barcus, Olivia Dixon, GunderKline and Tina Chen) dropped three seconds to finish 14th out of 21 teams. The girls 200 freestyle relay (Michaela McCuddy, Dixon, Seiko Yamashita and Sarah Morrison) finished 20th. The 400 freestyle relay (Barcus, Chen, Morrison and GunderKline) finished 15th with a time just off of their season best. In individual competition, GunderKline swam her fastest-ever time in the 200 freestyle, followed by Tina Chen who finished 43rd out of 50 swimmers in a brave performance, given a nagging back problem that slowed her down for much of January. Morrison and McCuddy swam their best-ever times in the 50 free, finishing 30th and 65th, respectively, followed by Yamashita in 73rd place. Barcus had a personal best in the 100 freestyle, finishing 37th, followed by Morrison in 57th place and Chen in 59th place out of 67 swimmers. Barcus also swam a personal best in the 100 backstroke to finish 32nd. Dixon finished 25th in the 100 breaststroke. Bulldog Sports Roundup Lady ‘Dogs fall in tourney The Lady Bulldogs ended another successful season, compiling a 10–10 record overall and 6–5 in the Metro Buckeye Conference. The game marked the last for seniors Evin Wimberly, Tricia McLinden and Jesslyn Yelton. Wimberly, who scored 1,779 career points in four years of varsity basketball, will play for Lafayette State University, a Division I college, next fall. The Lady Bulldogs started out in command against Covington, driving and penetrating the middle to score. Thanks to an aggressive defense, the Lady ’Dogs led at the end of the first quarter, 12–11, and again at the end of the second quarter, 27–25. But the second half belonged to the Buccaneers, who scored 20 points in the fourth quarter. Wimberly and Megan Burrick each had 13 points, while McLinden put up 10. Carly Bailey grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 3 points. A number of Lady Bulldogs were honored with awards last week. Alisha Lucas was named to the MBC all-sportsmanship team; Burrick and Bailey were named to the MBC second team; and Wimberly the league’s first team. In Division III/IV District 15, Burrick received all-district underclasswomen mention, and Wimberly was named an all-district senior. Senior night victory for boys The previous night against Jefferson was not so easy, and the Bulldogs came up short, losing 77–62. The Bulldogs were ahead most of the game against Ridgeville, with Issa Walker scoring a game-high 15 points, and Brad Benning-Clark contributing 11. Against Jefferson the Bulldogs had a tough time gaining control of the game. Benning-Clark scored a game-high 24, and Cody Johnson scored 18. The Bulldogs entered the Division IV southwest district tournament with a season record of 9–11 and 5–7 in the MBC. The team drew Jefferson, the No. 2 seed, in the first round on Wednesday. If the Bulldogs won that game, they will play the winner of the Miami Valley/Cedarville game on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m., at Wright State’s Nutter Center. Win again, and the Bulldogs will play on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m., also at the Nutter Center. 8th graders win MBC tourney “These young women committed themselves to excellence,” coach Becky Beekman said. “With a lot of determination, hard work and plenty of sweat, they achieved it.” The team’s players are Jenny Barnett, Ryder Comstock, Kristen Foster, Jessica Kellar, Ashanta Robinson, Theresa Skinner, Tenia Scarver and Kaci Yelton, who will proudly be wearing “Team First” t-shirts to let the community know about their victory.
