Bulldogs come up short

The YSHS boys basketball team’s struggle against Troy Christian at home last Tuesday, Feb. 1, was a game of call and answer that could have gone either way. The Bulldogs got closer to beating their conference rival than they did earlier in the season, but played conservatively at the end of the game and lost, 72–69.

By Friday, Feb. 4, YSHS had turned it around enough to beat Middletown Christian, 67–39.

The Bulldogs are now 8–10 for the season and 4–6 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.

Troy made the first basket on Tuesday night on an inside layup, which the Bulldogs answered on their next trip down the court. The Eagles averaged a 2-point lead with an effective press until, with a minute left in the first quarter, the Bulldogs took their first lead at 14–13.

Senior Cody Johnson, coming off a season high 19 points and 9 rebounds against Xenia Christian the week before, hit a 3-pointer to open the second quarter. The Bulldogs then forced a turnover, and Issa Walker, after making a foul shot, gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of night, at 25–19.

The Eagles, however, came back to take a 33–28 lead off a breakaway basket and a foul shot.

The Bulldogs jumped ahead in the third quarter on two free throws by Brad Benning-Clark, followed by another 3-pointer by Ryan Silvert.

The tit for tat resumed until Johnson tied the score at 48 with his second 3-pointer.

The teams continued to trade baskets, and with Troy ahead by one at 53–52 at the start of the fourth quarter, the players began to feel the pressure to make every point count. Benning-Clark drove to the hoop on two consecutive plays, the second of which was put back by Anthony Carter.

The Eagles took a commanding 63–56 lead late in the game. The Bulldogs shifted to man to man and started to foul, sending the Eagles to the free-throw line, where the Eagles were nearly perfect.

Benning-Clark scored a game-high 24 points, while Carter had 14 and Johnson 10.

Three days later, the Bulldogs recovered to beat Middletown Christian for the second time this season. The Bulldogs had their opponents by the tail at 16–6 in the first quarter and scored no less than 15 points in each of the following quarters.

Nick Eastman had a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds. Johnson scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while Walker had 9 points to go along with 8 boards.

Bulldog sports roundup

Swimmers end regular season
Last Friday’s Tippecanoe Relay meet was all about Tippecanoe, whose boys and girls teams both finished first among the six competing schools, including Yellow Springs. The Lady Bulldogs finished with 10 points to place sixth in the team rankings, while Tippecanoe won with 70 points. The Yellow Springs boys team finished third, scoring 38 points, while Tippecanoe won with 58.

Each swimmer was permitted to swim three relays, so coaches Abby Guiler and Dave Wishart arranged relay teams to spread participation as much as possible. “It was a chance to put people in races they don't normally swim,” Wishart said. “This was a shorter, more relaxing meet to end the regular season with. The focus is to swim well at sectionals now.”

Miriam Barcus, Olivia Dixon, Eve GunderKline and Sarah Morrison finished sixth in the 200 medley relay. Dixon, Barcus, GunderKline and Michaela McCuddy finished fifth in the 400 free relay. The girls finished sixth in two other relays, the 200 breaststroke (GunderKline, Morrison, Dixon and Seiko Yamashita) and 200 backstroke (Yamashita, Barcus, Morrison and McCuddy).

Unfortunately, the usually high-scoring boys 200-medley relay team of Sam Borchers, Brandon Carver-Halley, Will McCuddy and Carey Dixon was disqualified for an illegal finish. However, the boys fared well in other races to lift their place to third. The members of the 400 free relay (Michael Hosket, McCuddy, Jacob Wishart and Dixon) won their event, as did the 200 backstroke relay (Hosket, Wishart, Borchers and Peter Lovering). The 200 breaststroke relay (Carver-Halley, McCuddy, Wishart and Lovering) placed second.

Lady ’Dogs knock off Middletown
A full team effort helped the Lady Bulldogs easily beat conference rival Middletown Christian, 60–24, last Thursday.

Both teams got off to slow starts during a low-scoring first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead 28–12 by halftime, and YSHS never looked back.

Evin Wimberly and Carly Bailey led the Lady ’Dogs offense. Wimberly scored 20 points, had 9 assists and grabbed 5 steals, and Bailey had a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds. Tricia McLinden also contributed with 6 steals, 7 assists, 8 rebounds and 9 points. Jesslyn Yelton also had 9 points.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 10–9 overall and 6–5 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.
