Wimberly lifts YSHS over Eagles Senior Evin Wimberly scored 6 points, including the game winner, in the last 30 seconds to give the YSHS girls basketball team a stunning 58–54 win over Troy Christian on Monday. The victory capped an exciting week of basketball in which the Lady Bulldogs won another tight game, 46–45, over Madison Plains on Wednesday, Jan. 26 and lost 85–41 to Xenia Christian on Friday, Jan. 28. With two more wins, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 9–9 overall and 5–5 in the Metro Buckeye Conference. Playing her last home game in the Bulldogs blue and white, Wimberly proved once again why she will be playing Division I college ball next fall. Wimberly tied the score at 54 with 30 seconds left when, after Troy Christian missed the front end of a one and one, she drove down the court and hit a great running jumper. The Lady Bulldogs quickly regained possession when as Troy rushed the ball up to midcourt, Megan Burrick took a tough charge with 15 seconds on the clock. Wimberly then missed a jumper that would have put the Lady Bulldogs ahead, but as the ball went out of bounds it was last touched by the Eagles. The clock read six seconds, enough time for one last shot. Standing under the Lady Bulldogs’ basket, Wimberly passed to Burrick, who gave the ball right back to Wimberly, who hit an eight-foot jumper with an Eagle defender right in her face, putting the Lady ’Dogs up by 2. After the Eagles called a timeout, Wimberly completed her great game by stealing the inbounds pass and scoring on a layup. Coach Shirley Cummins said that she wanted the ball in Wimberly’s hands at the end of the game. “She is the go-to person,” Cummins said. “She can move the ball around, she can create and she can finish.” Wimberly finished Senior Night with 21 points, 4 assists and 5 steals. The team’s other seniors, Tricia McLinden and Jesslyn Yelton, had 10 points and 2 points, respectively. The three players were honored with a short ceremony at halftime, during which they started a new tradition of handing down a basketball to the junior class. The game couldn’t have started better for the Lady Bulldogs, who led after the first quarter 19–13. Cummins described the team’s play as poetic and said that it was the strongest quarter the Lady Bulldogs played this year. The Eagles played more aggressively in the second quarter and tied the score at 28 at the half. The teams traded baskets throughout the second half, the Eagles scoring most of their points in the paint, while the Lady Bulldogs used an aggressive defense to create points on offense. Burrick scored 14 points to go along with 4 steals. Carly Bailey had 11 points and 13 rebounds, 8 of which came on the offensive glass. Cummins praised her players for maintaining their composure at the end of the game. “They played this game with their hearts,” she said. “That’s the way the seniors needed to go out,” she added. Last week’s game against Madison Plains was another show stopper with Wimberly driving the length of the court to score the winning basket with five seconds left in the game. Wimberly scored 28 points and had 6 steals. McLinden had 7 points and Bailey had 6 points and 7 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs were dominated by Xenia Christian, falling further and further behind after the first quarter ended 22–8. The gap widened to an ocean at 43–13 at the half, from which recovery was not an option. Wimberly again led the Lady ’Dogs with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Burrick was right behind with 14 points. Bulldog Sports Roundup Boys swim to top of Bulldog meet At the same meet, the YSHS girls team placed 8th out of 10 teams. Stivers won the girls meet with 85 points, followed by Clinton Massie (77) and Greenon (52). Both Yellow Springs teams had a sparse turnout for a makeup meet on Friday evening at the Bellefontaine Invitational. Due to illness, injuries and the YSHS One Act Plays, just three girls and three boys swam for Yellow Springs. Bellefontaine won handily in the girls and boys competitions. Credit for the boys’ win at the Yellow Springs Invitational goes in large measure to Carey Dixon and Evan Gerthoffer, who pointed out to their coaches that there were enough Yellow Springs swimmers to enter a team in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Brandon Carver-Halley, Dixon, Will McCuddy and Michael Hosket came through by placing second. That score was followed by another strong second place finish for the 200 medley relay team (Jacob Wishart, Carver-Halley, McCuddy and Gerthoffer). Finally, the 400 freestyle relay (Wishart, McCuddy, Hosket and Gerthoffer) won its race in a season-best 3:58.03. In individual competition, Wishart, McCuddy and Dixon placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 free. Gerthoffer placed third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free. Carver-Halley placed third in the 100 breaststroke. For the girls at the Yellow Springs Invitational, Eve GunderKline placed second and Olivia Dixon placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke. At the Bellefontaine meet, Will McCuddy placed second in the 200 free and third in the 100 butterfly. Dixon took second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free. Wishart was second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 free. On the girls side, GunderKline won the 200 free, swimming the race for the first time, and the 100 breaststroke. Dixon placed third in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 100 free. Michaela McCuddy placed fifth in the 100 free. Boys basketball loses three The Bulldogs are now 7–9 for the season and 3–5 in the Metro Buckeye Conference. The ’Dogs played Sidney Lehman after a 10-day layoff due to inclement weather. The Bulldogs came from behind to cut the lead to 24–20 at halftime but were unable to close the gap to less than 6 points. Brad Benning-Clark was the high scorer with 17 points. Cody Johnson had 10 points, and Kilan Brown, in his first varsity action, scored 2. Anthony Carter scored 5. Friday’s game against Xenia Christian was close into the fourth quarter, when Nick Eastman got active on the low post and caused some of Xenia’s key players to foul out. The Bulldogs were down 11 with two minutes left, and Ryan Silvert hit four consecutive free throws. With 50 seconds left, the Bulldogs managed to cut the gap to 4 points on two more free throws and a 3-pointer by Johnson. But Yellow Springs ended up on the wrong side of the ensuing free-throw game. Carter scored a season-high 12 points, while Silvert had 10. Eastman had 4 points and 10 rebounds. The makeup game against Cedarville was a low-scoring night. Yellow Springs led 16–11 at halftime and, after falling behind, made a valiant effort to cut the Indians’ lead to 32–28 with a minute left. Benning-Clark had a game-high 17 points.
