Lady Bulldogs sink Pirates

With the YSHS boys basketball team and the swim teams canceling their games over the last week because of the weather, the girls basketball team was the only YSHS sports team to play a regularly scheduled game, and on Monday, Jan. 24, they managed a 49–29 home win over the Riverside Pirates.

After both teams got off to a slow start in front of a few zeazlous fans, the Lady Bulldogs went to task against the Pirates. The Lady ’Dogs made aggressive steals and then slowed down the pace, patiently waiting for an open inside shot.

The first quarter ended with YSHS ahead 11–9.

As the scoring gap widened, the Pirates grew nervous and began taking wild outside shots.

The Lady Bulldogs remained focused, staying tough underneath to take a 24–16 lead at the half. YSHS outscored the Pirates 14–9 in the third and held the Pirates to just 4 points in the last quarter.

Evin Wimberly led the Lady ’Dogs with a triple-double, scoring 26 points, grabbing 10 steals and pulling down 14 rebounds. She was 10 for 16 from the field and 6 for 6 from the foul line. Wimberly also had 6 assists.

Carly Bailey pulled down 14 rebounds, and Megan Burrick scored 6 points to go along with 4 steals. Tricia McLinden grabbed 5 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 7–8 overall and 3–4 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.

Basketball, swim meets postponed

Last week’s snowstorm caused an unexpected break for the YSHS boys basketball and boys and girls swim teams, which had to postpone their games and meets.

The boys basketball home game against Ridgeville Christian, originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 21, was rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 12. The junior varsity teams tip-off at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs’ Saturday, Jan. 22, game at Cedarville was rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29. The JV teams play at 6 p.m., and the varsity game is slated to start at 7:30 p.m.

The Bellefontaine Invitational swim meet, originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, was rescheduled for Friday, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bellefontaine YMCA.
