OBITUARIES

Mary Lou Trollinger

Mary Lou Trollinger died Thursday, Jan. 20, at her home in Yellow Springs. She was 75.

Mary Lou, the daughter of the late Enid Lingo Williams and Earl Clifford Williams, was born July 8, 1929, in Yellow Springs. She was a resident of Clark County and attended Oak Grove School. She moved back to Yellow Springs in 1943. She was a 1947 graduate of Yellow Springs High School, and married Marvin E. Trollinger that same year. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on Dec. 17, 2004.

She was a member of the 4-H Club in Clark County, the high school chorus and band, Order of Eastern Star for 55 years (serving as Worthy Matron in 1963), and secretary and charter member of the Bryan High School Alumni Association and the Xenia Church of Christ.

Mary Lou retired from the Yellow Springs schools in 1992 after 22 years as a cafeteria manager. She was also founder of the Yellow Springs Football Booster Club.

As a talented craftswoman, she enjoyed crocheting, ceramics and sewing.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin; sister and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Charles Hosket and Howard Trollinger, all of Yellow Springs; daughter, Kathie Duffey and her fiance, Harold Jackson of Springfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Kay Trollinger, Terry and June Trollinger, all of Yellow Springs, and David and Beverly Trollinger of Springfield; grandchildren, Mark Trollinger of Arizona, Jason Duffey of Cincinnati, Matthew and Angela Duffey of Centerville, Justin, Brian, and Christine Trollinger of Yellow Springs and Andrea and Sarah Trollinger of Springfield; and a great-grandson, David Duffey of Centerville.

Services were held Monday, Jan. 24, at the Jackson Lytle & Williams Funeral Home in Yellow Springs, with interment following in Byron Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice or the Springfield Regional Cancer Center.

Frances Schilling

Frances I. Schilling of Spring Valley died Sunday, Jan. 23, at Liberty Nursing Home. She was 87.

She was born on Aug. 31, 1917, in London, Ohio, the daughter of Floyd E. and Blanche A. (Shoemaker) Davis. She attended Dayton Avenue Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kathryn Schilling; four sisters; and four brothers.

She is survived by her husband, Scott Schilling, whom she married on Aug. 9, 1943; children, Gwendolyn Rose and Keith Engle of Yellow Springs and Reva Marlene and James Webb of Pittsboro, Ind.; grandchildren, Carolyn and Anthony Fyffe of Lebanon, Rebecca and Christopher George of Nobelsville, Ind., Debra Engle and Dale Pemberton of Springfield, S. Derrick and Susan Parker of Centreville, Va., and Craig and Rachel Engle of New Carlisle; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Gregory Fyffe and Andrew George; stepgrandchildren Oliver and Heather Webb; sisters, Maryann Woods of Chillicothe, Betty Richardson of Zahns Corner and Barbara Osborne of Stockdale; and brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Connie Davis of Chillicothe.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 27, 1 p.m., at Boyer Funeral Home, 125 West Second Street in Waverly, with burial to follow in the Evergreen Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite children’s hospital charity.

Valorous Spencer

Valorous “Val” Spencer of Xenia died Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Kettering Memorial Hospital. He was 83.

Born on Nov. 30, 1921, in Springfield, he was the son of George Fisher and Hattie (Graves) Spencer. Val served in U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was decorated with the EAME campaign medal with three bronze battle stars and several other citations. He worked as an engineering coordinator for many years at Morris Bean & Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Guilma I. “Jean” (Yates) Spencer, whom he married on July 12, 1945; sons, Gary Spencer of Norfolk, Va., and James L. Spencer of Xenia; grandchildren, Beverly and Patrick Baller of Orange Park, Fla., Gregory and Lisa Spencer of Norfolk, Va., Larry Spencer of Xenia and Connie Spencer of Jamestown; great-grandchildren, Michael Baller and Jonathon and Dylan and Tyler Spencer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 22, at McColaugh Funeral Home in Xenia, with entombment following in Valley View Memorial Gardens in Xenia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 6110 Execution Boulevard, Suite 1010, Rockville, Md., 20852-9813.

Donald D. Evans

Donald David Evans of Xenia died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 22. He was 43.

He was born Nov. 7, 1961, in Xenia. He was a 1980 graduate of Xenia High School and worked at Vernay Laboratories. He was a member of AHOP church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; a niece; and a sister-in-law.

He is survived by his children, Tyler David, Dustin Kyle Evans and Logan Diane Evans, all of Clinton County; and siblings, Ronald Paul Evans of Beavercreek, Paul and Bonnie Evans Jr. of Blaine, Ohio, Donna Evans, Nedra Paulette Evans, Margie and Ernie Slone, Linda and Rob Greathouse, Sharon and Larry Williams of Xenia, and Elizabeth “Babe” and Bob Eakins of Jamestown.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, Jan. 26, at A House of Prayer in Xenia. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. McColaugh Funeral Home in Xenia is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva L. Gudgel

Geneva Lee Benton Gudgel died on Tuesday, Jan. 18. She was 86.

She was born in the country outside of Yellow Springs on Aug. 26, 1918, at the home of her parents, Thomas and Liler (Chenault) Benton. Geneva was a loving, kind and soft-spoken person. She loved to bake, and those who knew her could depend on her baked goods for any and all occasions. She graduated from Cedarville High School in 1938. After graduation she worked in New Jersey as a nanny and then attended Wilberforce University.

Geneva and John Winston Gudgel were married on Dec. 15, 1946. From this union were born two children, Veda Kay and John Winston II. Geneva was a dedicated member of Central Chapel AME Church, where she was involved with the Senior Choir, Stewardess Board, and Missionary Board, director of Benevolence Aid and recognized as a woman of distinction. She belonged to a number of different organizations including the Victorettes Choir, Gamma Phi Delta sorority, Jolly Stitchers Club, Silver Leaf Club, Retirement Set and the Yellow Springs Senior Center. She worked at Antioch College, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Yellow Springs Senior Center and Wilberforce University, where she retired after 20 years of service in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Emma Mae (Russell) Embrey; brother and sister-in-law, Edward John and Mary Benton; infant brother, Fielding; brother-in-law and his wife, Vernis and Viola Gudgel; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Margaret and Louis Goodson and Helen and Bill Bass; and niece, Vercenia Bass Vance.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Veda and Jack Glenn of Columbus and John and Kathy Gudgel of Yellow Springs; granddaughter, January Curry and great-grandson, Rickey Tre’ Harris, both of Dayton; nieces and nephews, Joyce Goodson, Edward “JR” and Leighann Benton, all of Yellow Springs, Ayisha and Frank Duncan, Norman and Irma Bass, Ronald and Jean Benton, all of Springfield; cousins, Elizabeth Huguely of Dayton, James Blanton and Anna Mae Beasley of Richmond, Ky., and Ethel Beaumont of Detroit.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 22, at Central Chapel AME Church, with burial following in Glen Forest Cemetery. Porter-Qualls Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Delma Louise Day

Delma Louise Day died Sunday, Jan. 23. She was 82.

Born Aug. 25, 1922, she was the daughter of Stuart and Sarah (Puckett) Rose in Wilder, Va. She retired from Greene Memorial Hospital after 20 years of service. Delma was an avid reader who enjoyed visiting at the Yellow Springs Library. She was also passionate about gardening, sewing and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her children, Brenda and Eckhard Kohler of Beavercreek, Wayne and Sharon Day of Xenia, Betty and Hugh Livingston of Yellow Springs, Deborah Day of Xenia and Gary Day of Yellow Springs; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at the family’s request. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Jackson, Lytle & Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ellen Lohnes

Mary Ellen Lohnes of Springfield died Sunday, Jan. 23, in the St. John’s Center. She was 96.

She was born on March 25, 1908, the daughter of James and Bertha (Bosley) Christopher. Mary Ellen graduated from Springfield High School in 1925 and from Wittenberg College with a B.A. in 1929. She taught English, French, Latin and physical education at Bryan High School.

She married Edwin B. Lohnes on Sept. 20, 1932. They were married for 58 years until his death in 1991. Mary Ellen was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she served in Mary Martha, as treasurer of Circle of Faith, and as president of the Altar Guild and played in the hand bell choir. She was a volunteer with Lutheran Inner Mission and Young Women’s Mission. She enjoyed music, bridge, bowling, walking, yoga and crosswords.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Philip Edwin; one sister, Hazel Lewis; and two brothers, Ross Barner and Louis Christopher.

She is survived by her children, Christopher and Patricia Lohnes of Springfield, Dr. Lee Lohnes and his domestic partner, John Town of Los Angeles and Jonathan and Vida Lohnes of Rhododendron, Ore.; grandchildren, Kevin and Vicki Lohnes of Springfield, Brian Lohnes of Salt Lake City and Timothy Lohnes of Portland, Ore; and great-grandchildren, Alison, Christina, Stephanie and Elizabeth Lohnes.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, Jan. 27, 4–7 p.m., in the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home in Springfield. A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 28, 10 a.m., in the First Lutheran Church, 30 South Wittenberg in Springfield. Burial will be in the Ferncliff Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church or one’s favorite charity.

Correction

The obituary last week for Lou Allegra McNary misspelled the last name of one of Ms. McNary’s coworkers at Vernay Laboratories. It is Gary Blevins, not Blooms.
