’84–86 win alumni tourney
By Lauren Heaton
Approximately 300 to 400 people came out to support
the 2004 YSHS alumni men’s basketball tournament on Sunday and Monday,
Dec. 26 and 27, at Yellow Springs High School. Basketball fans saw the
team from the Classes of 1984–86 win the championship for the sixth
time since 1994.
In the tournament finals, the ’84–86 team
came back from a 31–17 deficit against the 1995–98 team at
halftime, taking the lead with three minutes left and held on for a 61–57
victory. David Fogarty was the lead scorer for the ’84–86
team, which won the tournament three years in a row in 1994, 1995 and
1996, and then again in 1998 and 1999.
In the first game of the tournament on Sunday, the
’84–86 team easily defeated the team from ’88–94,
71–56. The team of ’95–98 had an easier time, winning
by forfeit because their opponents, the Classes of 1999–2001, did
not have enough players. The class of 1983 and earlier got a bye in the
first round but were defeated by the ’84–86 squad, 45–33.
In the last game of the day, the classes of 2002–03 topped the Class
of 2004, 49–40.
Admission from the tournament raised enough money to
buy several new practice uniforms for the YSHS boys basketball team and
put some money toward a basketball shooting machine, said Brad Newsome,
the coach of the boys varsity team.
Swimmers back in pool after break
The YSHS swim teams competed in a meet at the Dayton
YMCA on Monday night.
The girls swam a tri-meet against Stivers School for
the Arts and Carlisle High School and came in second, with 67 points,
ahead of Carlisle’s 45 and behind Stivers’ 138. The YSHS boys
lost a dual meet to Stivers, 53–35.
In the girls competition, both the 200 medley relay
team (Miriam Barcus, Olivia Dixon, Eve GunderKline and Tina Chen) and
the 400 free relay team (Barcus, Dixon, GunderKline and Sarah Morrison)
placed second.
In individual competition, Barcus won the 100 backstroke
and finished second in the 200 free. GunderKline placed second in the
200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Chen finished second in
the 500 free and third in the 200 free. Morrison placed second in the
100 free and third in the 50 free. Dixon was third in the 100 free and
fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
In the boys competition, both the 200 medley relay
team (Jacob Wishart, Brandon Carver-Halley, Will McCuddy and Evan Gerthoffer)
and the 400 freestyle relay team (Wishart, McCuddy, Gerthoffer and Carey
Dixon) placed second.
In individual competition, McCuddy finished first in
the 100 butterfly and second in the 200 free. Gerthoffer won the 50 free
and placed second in the 100 free. Carver-Halley won the 100 breaststroke
and placed third in the 100 freestyle. Dixon was third in the 200 freestyle
and the 500 freestyle. Sam Borchers placed third in the 100 backstroke
and fourth in the 500 free. Wishart was second in both the 200 IM and
the 100 backstroke. Pete Lovering placed third in the 50 free.
Coaches Dave Wishart and Abby Guiler said they were
pleased with performances by the Yellow Springs athletes in a Monday night
meet, which came on the heels of a long break.
“We need to refocus and begin to race more
aggressively in the remaining weeks of the season,” Wishart said.
Both YSHS teams competed in their second meet of the
season at the Springfield North Panther Invitational on Dec. 18 at the
Springfield YMCA. The girls team did not score in the meet, while the
boys team placed seventh among 12 teams, scoring 23 points.
In the girls competition, the 400 medley relay (Barcus,
GunderKline, Morrison, and Dixon) placed 11th. The same girls placed 17th
in the 200 free relay.
Seiko Yamashita and Stephanie Goode both had strong
swims in the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke, and Michaela McCuddy followed
suit for her first meet of the season in the 100 free and the 100 backstroke.
Morrison swam to 15th place in the 200 free. Barcus placed 14th in the
200 free. GunderKline placed 15th in the 100 free and 11th in the 100
breaststroke.
In the boys competition, the 400 freestyle relay team
(Gerthoffer, McCuddy, Dixon, and Wishart) placed fourth with each athlete
posting good early season splits. The 200 medley relay (Wishart, Carver-Halley,
McCuddy and Gerthoffer) placed seventh.
In individual competition, Wishart finished third in
the 500 free and seventh in the 200 free. Lovering placed 18th in the
50 freestyle and 17th in the 100 breaststroke. Gerthoffer finished 13th
in the 200 free and 17th in the 100 free. Dixon placed 15th in the 200
free. Carver-Halley placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke. McCuddy placed
eighth in the 500 freestyle and 11th in the 200 freestyle.
“This meet is usually a disaster for us
due to missing swimmers, but we had almost everyone there and no one missed
a race,” Coach Wishart said. “Overall, we are swimming quite
well going into the holiday break.”
