YSHS sports roundup

Swimming opener at Greenon
The YSHS girls and boys swim teams opened their seasons with the Greenon High School Fall Invitational at Wittenberg last Friday evening. Comprised of mainly distance swimmers, the Yellow Springs teams were challenged to swim well for an early season sprint meet.

The girls finished 9th out of 11 teams. All 3 of the Lady Bulldogs’ points were scored by Eve GunderKline, who placed fourth in the 50 breaststroke.

The boys team was 12th, in a field of 12 teams. The Bulldogs’ points were scored by Brandon Carver-Halley, who placed fifth, also in the 50 breaststroke.

In other girls events, the 200 freestyle relay team of Olivia Dixon, GunderKline, Sarah Morrison and Tina Chen placed 12th. The same girls placed 15th in the 200 medley relay.

In the 100 freestyle, GunderKline placed ninth, Chen was 24th and Morrison finished 26th. Morrison swam to a 14th-place finish in the 50 butterfly, while Dixon and Chen placed 16th and 24th, respectively, in the 50 breaststroke.

Seiko Yamashita and Stephanie Goode, competing in their first high school races, both swam well in the 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke.

In the boys competition, the 200 medley relay team of Jacob Wishart, Brandon Carver-Halley, Will McCuddy and Evan Gerthoffer placed 8th among 13 teams.

In the 100 freestyle, Wishart finished 11th, followed by Gerthoffer, who was 13th, McCuddy, 15th, Carey Dixon, 29th, and Carver-Halley, 32nd.

Pete Lovering placed ninth in the 50 breaststroke and 20th in the 50 free. McCuddy was 10th in the 50 butterfly. In the 50 backstroke, Wishart finished in seventh place while Dixon took 16th.

The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Wishart, Gerthoffer, Lovering and McCuddy placed seventh, just out of the scoring.

Coaches Dave Wishart and Abby Guiler were pleased overall with the teams’ performances and expect significant improvement during the weeks ahead.

Boys basketball splits
The YSHS boys varsity team split two games last week, losing their first game of the season, 65–58, to Ridgeville Christian Friday, then coming back home the following night to beat Greenon, 64–63, at the buzzer.

The Bulldogs are 4–1 overall and 1–1 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.

The Bulldogs fell short in the first quarter of Friday’s game against Ridgeville and never closed the 4 to 5-point gap. The ’Dogs used a strong pressure defense to get a season-high 29 turnovers, but with a combination of bad passes and communication trouble, the team sabotaged itself with a season low of nine conversions.

Ridgeville Christian also had a strong 3-point shooter that the Bulldogs failed to shut down, coach Brad Newsome said.

Brad Benning-Clark lead the Bulldogs with 25 points. Cody Johnson scored 14, and Issa Walker had 11.

YSHS showed resilience on Saturday, taking a 20–15 lead after the first quarter against Greenon.

The Rams outscored the ’Dogs in the second quarter to take a 37–32 lead at the half.

But the Bulldogs came back to regain a slight lead after the third period, 49–48.

With a minute and 20 seconds left in the game, the Bulldogs led 60–56. But the Rams made short order of cutting that lead to 62–61 before running down the clock to call a time out with 19 seconds left.

Eight seconds later the Rams missed a shot, but put back the rebound for a 63–62 lead.

After a YSHS timeout, Ryan Silvert threw a baseball-like pass to Johnson, who kissed a shot off the glass at the buzzer for the win.

“To lose to Ridgeville the night before and bounce back like that shows a lot of strength on the team’s part,” Newsome said.

Three Bulldogs scored in double-digits, Benning-Clark, 22 points, Johnson, 16, and Silvert, 13.

The boys freshmen basketball team trampled Greenon 44–22 on Saturday.

The Bulldogs played great defense and seven of the team’s nine players scored. James Butler had 15 points, Kyle Buchwalder had 10 and Kilan Brown scored 9.

‘Toys for Tots’ at Troy
Fans traveling to the boys basketball games at Troy Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 21, can donate to “Toys for Tots,” as part of a weeklong service project at Troy Christian.

Fans who bring a wrapped, new toy get into the game free. Those making donations should add a tag that mentions age and gender suitability, if needed.

Girls basketball loses by 2
In a disappointing performance against Fayetteville on Monday, the YSHS girls basketball team lost 49–47.

The Lady Bulldogs came out strong to lead after each of the game’s first three quarters: 19–14 in the first, 37–27 in the second and 42–38 in the third.

Carly Bailey pulled down 17 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive end of the court, to go along with 8 points. Megan Burrick and Tricia McLinden each scored 9 and Evin Wimberly had 13.

McKinney girls game postponed
The McKinney girls basketball game against Miami Valley on Saturday, Dec. 18, has been postponed. Miami Valley will be short on players due to vacation.

The seventh grade boys will play at 10 a.m. and the eighth-graders tip-off at 11:15.
