Lady Bulldogs top Miami Valley

Though the Yellow Springs girls basketball team entered its game Saturday against Miami Valley with a 2–3 record, Rams coach Randy Duff had a feeling the Lady Bulldogs would play a tough game. The Lady Bulldogs sustained a tough pace to defeat the visiting Rams, 60–46, after falling to Stivers 59–56 last Thursday. YSHS also lost to Dayton Christian, 52–49, Monday night.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 3–4 overall.

On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs came out aggressively to build a 20–9 first-quarter lead. Yellow Springs’ defense and rebounding gave the Rams a scoring complex and reason to question their main defense. But Miami Valley came back to tie the score at 22 half way through the second quarter. The Lady ’Dogs were forced to make sloppy passes and a number of turnovers, as coach Shirley Cummins kept telling them to slow the game down.

Coming out of the half up just 29–27, the Lady Bulldogs used full-court pressure to drive the Rams underneath the board, where Carly Bailey’s height helped the home team to a 42–33 lead mid-way through the third quarter. The Bulldogs were led by Megan Burrick’s great defense and Bailey’s consistent put-backs.

Miami Valley continued to turn the ball over into the fourth quarter when Burrick stole the ball and drove it down the lane, making a perfect dish to Evin Wimberly for an easy layup, giving the Lady Bulldogs a decisive 51–40 lead. The Lady ’Dogs went on a 7-point run with just over two minutes left, though the Rams scored a few more baskets.

The tough defensive gang of Tricia McLinden, Wimberly and Burrick forced Miami Valley to make 25 turnovers, Duff said after the game. “Yellow Springs brought a tremendous amount of intensity and desire into this game today,” he said.

Cummins said that the Lady Bulldogs won the game with hustle. The team focused on shutting down the Rams go-to player, Angela Bethel, and maintained a press, its bread and butter, for most of the game. YSHS also benefited from Bailey’s eighth double doubles. She had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

“Carly has really stepped up this year. She’s jumping and yanking down rebounds and working on moves underneath,” Cummins said. “She definitely compliments Evin and Megan and is going to be our other secret weapon.”

Emily Foubert scored 2 points and had 2 assists and 5 rebounds. Becky Pasch scored 5 points, while Alisha Lucas and Jesslyn Yelton had 2 points each. Tina Peters had an assist.

Against Stivers, Yellow Springs played well throughout the game, tying the score at 13 in the first quarter, leading 25–24 in the second, and staying right behind their opponents to the end of the game. Wimberly and Burrick each scored 15 points, and Bailey had 13 points while shooting 9 of 10 from the line and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Against Dayton Christian, the Lady Bulldogs held their own, tying the score at 10 at the end of the first quarter and remaining 10 points behind until the game’s last moments. Wimberly scored 24 points, while Burrick had 9, McLinden had 8 and Yelton and Pasch each had 3.

Duncan Silvert-Noftle

Silvert-Noftle an All-American

Last week, Yellow Springs High School senior Duncan Silvert-Noftle was officially named to the 2004 Adidas High School Boys All-America Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The organization honored 75 boys soccer players from across the country this year. Silvert-Noftle was among nine players from Ohio and one of the 33 forwards named All-American.

He plays for the YSHS soccer team and Team Dayton and was named the Ohio Division III soccer player of the year. For two consecutive years, Silvert-Noftle has been the unanimous choice for Division III Dayton district player of the year as well as Metro Buckeye Conference player of the year. He was also named to the Division III Dayton district and the Dayton North sectional all-star teams and the MBC all-stars team for three years in a row.

For the last three years, the YSHS boys soccer team has won the MBC title and finished the season ranked in the top 10 in Division III. The team was the district runner-up in 2002, district champion and regional runner-up in 2003 and district champion in 2004.

Silvert-Noftle is the son of Donna Silvert and Tom Noftle.

Bulldogs off to a perfect start

The YSHS boys basketball team extended its 24-game home win streak last week with victories over Miami Valley and Carlisle. The Bulldogs beat Miami Valley, 86–71, on Friday night, and then defeated Carlisle, 58–57, the following evening.

The Bulldogs improved to 3–0 overall and 1–0 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.

YSHS shot out of the gates against Miami Valley, building a 69–48 lead by the beginning of the third quarter. But the Bulldogs, showing some lack of composure, let the Rams back in the game.

Scoring on a series of foul shots, the Rams cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 6. The ‘Dogs built their lead back to 10 with few minutes left in the game, maintaining their pressure defense.

The Bulldogs shot 72 percent from the foul line. Brad Benning-Clark had a career high 28 points, and Cody Johnson had a varsity career and season high of 25 points.

The Bulldogs beat Carlisle for the first time ever in a good character-building test for the team.

YSHS jumped out to an early 14–4 run, then went up 18–8 before ending the first quarter ahead 18–14.

After the Bulldogs fell behind in the second quarter, Issa Walker scored 10 of his 13 points in the period to help the ’Dogs regain the lead at the half.

With under a minute left, Carlisle was up by 2, at 57–55, when Ryan Silvert hit a 3-point shot to put the Bulldogs ahead to win the game.

“It was a little too exciting for me,” coach Brad Newsome said. “But it was a character win because we had to fight through some adversity. I’m proud of the fact that they made a couple of nice defensive stands to take back the lead.”

The Bulldogs shot six of nine from the line, but had a high number of turnovers and fouls, which Newsome calls “over-personaling the ball” and “playing hard but not smart.” The team needs to work on disciplining its good energy, he said.

Benning-Clark led all scorers with 21 points. He is averaging 24 points per game.
