YSHS Bulldogs victorious in Homecoming game
The inhospitable cold and drizzle that started Friday’s Homecoming game against Lima-Perry did nothing but invigorate the Bulldog zeal for a much deserved 37–22 victory. Yellow Springs wasted no time at all for its first touchdown seven minutes into the game on a 14-yard run by Matt Hull. The home team occupied Lima territory for the rest of the quarter and ended in perfect position at the start of the second quarter to score the evening’s number-two touchdown on a 24-yard run by Cody Johnson. At 12–0, the Commodores fought back for two back-to-back touchdowns, one on a fake pass deep in the Bulldogs’ zone. But another 40-yard charge into the end zone by Hull put Yellow Springs up again at 18–14 before the half. Both teams scored several times, but the Bulldogs were determined that this was their night. Johnson ran four yards for his second touchdown in the fourth quarter, with Scott Keyes kicking for the extra point. Hull also snuck in one more 19-yard touchdown before the night was over. Hull finished with 27 carries and a total gain of 197 yards. Johnson had 10 carries for a total of 70 yards. Kyle Truitt caught 2 passes for 57 yards, and quarterback Jake Fulton was 3 for 7 in passing for 71 yards. Accolades are also due to Yellow Springs’ defensive players. Jerrico Stubblefield had 11 tackles and an interception, Kilan Brown had 8 tackles, Hull had 6 tackles, Martin Bakari had 5 tackles and an interception, and Josh Foster had 4 tackles. Having the 1973 team at the game was an inspiration that pumped the team up to grab a great win. With 23 minutes left to play in the game, Emily Foubert scored unassisted, getting around both the sweeper and the goalkeeper. Keeper Lila Jensen had seven saves and earned her fifth shutout of the year (Yellow Springs had six total shutouts). Outside backs India Scarver and Olivia Smith contained the Dayton Christian strikers, Tricia McLinden aided the defense with her great clears and sweeper Jennifer Smith led the defense with her speed and ball skills.
