Sports Round up
Compiled by Lauren Heaton
Volleyball wins one, loses one
Last Thursday, the YSHS volleyball team
stumbled against the Troy Christian Eagles in three straight games. Monday
night at home, YSHS turned it around and beat Miami Valley, 3–0.
The Eagles came out swinging and won the first two
games, 25–11 and 25–7. By game three, the Lady Bulldogs had
had enough. With strong volleys, patience and communication, the Lady
’Dogs managed a proud loss, 26–24. The team received strong
defensive play from Katy McEvoy, Ashlee Jackson, Alisha Lucas, Megan Lents,
Evin Wimberly, Niquelle Orr and Allie Robles.
The Lady Dogs put together a solid win over Miami Valley,
25–17, 25–16 and 25–21. Every Bulldog scored, with Robles
the high scorer.
Boys soccer wins three more
The YSHS boys soccer team won three more games, tripping up Xenia
Christian for a 5–0 win at home on Tuesday, Oct. 5. The Bulldogs
then traveled to Fairborn for a sound 5–1 win on Thursday, and defeated
West Liberty Salem, 4–0, on Saturday.
The Bulldogs are now 10–1–1 and were seeded
first in the Southwest District Division III Dayton 2 soccer tournament,
which begins at home next week. The Bulldogs are ranked fourth in the
state in Division III.
On Tuesday, Noah Woodburn opened the scoring early.
Duncan Silvert-Noftle immediately followed that up when he scored on a
header off a corner kick from Scott Keyes. Woodburn scored another goal
on an assist from David Suzel, and Silvert-Noftle kicked in two in the
second half to close out the scoring.
On Thursday, Kyle Buchwalder scored 20 minutes into
the match against the Fairborn Skyhawks. Next, Silvert-Noftle found the
net when Woodburn sent a through-ball from the midfield, and again on
a penalty kick. Keyes closed out the first-half scoring with a rocket
from 25 yards out, and Silvert-Noftle scored the lone goal of the second
half.
Woodburn buried the Bulldogs’ first goal against
the Tigers on Saturday off a corner kick from Mike Hosket. Buchwalder,
Silvert-Noftle and Ryan Silvert each scored before the end of the game.
“In these three games we outshot our opponents
57–9,” coach Jim Hardman said. “I’m especially
pleased with the number of different players who are scoring, and our
transition from defense to offense has shown consistent and considerable
improvement over the last several games.”
The YSHS JV boys soccer team picked up a pair of 2–0
victories against Fairborn and West Liberty Salem. The JV squad is now
6–2–1.
Charlie Cromer and Jeremy Upton each scored once in
the Bulldogs’ win over the Skyhawks. Evan Gerthoffer converted two
chances just 15 seconds apart against West Liberty Salem.
Girls win last home game
After scoring just 1 goal in the first half against Troy Christian
on Saturday, the YSHS girls soccer team exploded for 7 goals in the second
half for a big win. The Lady Bulldogs are now 8–2–3.
Laura Garcia scored the only goal in the first half,
off an assist by Erin Silvert-Noftle.
The Lady Bulldogs came together in the second half,
taking advantage of their talent and Troy’s lack of players to win.
Defensive players Tricia McLinden, Jennifer Smith,
India Scarver and Olivia Smith controlled the back field, making goalie
Lila Jensen’s job easier. Midfielders Paia LaPalombara, Silvert-Noftle
and Stephanie Goode were great assets on both offense and defense.
The front line of Emily Dozeman, Emily Foubert, Garcia
and Megan Burrick pooled together to take numerous shots on Troy’s
goal. Garcia got her first hat trick of the season. The Yellow Springs
bench was invaluable, holding their own against Troy’s starters
and allowing the Lady ’Dogs to keep fresh legs out on the field.
Foubert scored 2 goals, and Burrick, LaPalombara and
Sarah Finn each had 1. Jensen had 3 saves in goal.
Football loses to Riverside
The YSHS football team scored twice on short runs in the second
half, but still lost to Riverside last Friday, Oct. 8, 59–13.
Matt Hull scored first on a five-yard run. Scott Keyes
kicked the extra point. Quarterback Jake Fulton scored next on a one-yard
run, but this time the extra point was no good.
The defense had a good showing, with Kilan Brown garnering
an interception; Jerrico Stubblefield collected 6 tackles, Cody Johnson
and Miguel Visbal had 5 each and Josh Foster and Martin Bakari each had
4.
Hull had 45 yards on 14 carries and a 11-yard catch.
Foster rushed for 57 yards on 13 carries, Johnson carried the ball 3 times
for 43 yards, and Stubblefield had 19 yards on 3 attempts. Fulton was
7 of 22, passing for 73 yards with 3 interceptions.
On Oct. 1 the Bulldogs were crushed by Marion Catholic,
63–0. Brown had a fumble recovery, and Stubblefield and Bakari each
had 7 tackles. Hull rushed 14 times for 36 yards, and Stubblefield had
two catches for 72 yards.
The McKinney Middle School football team guaranteed
its first winning season in seven years with a 48–24 win over Jefferson
last Thursday. The Bulldogs are now 4–2, heading into their last
game of the year, Saturday, Oct. 16, at Dayton Christian. Kickoff is at
1 p.m.
Joey Bailey scored 6 touchdowns against Jefferson,
2 on passes from quarterback Kevin Sikes-Gilbert.
XC team smashes records
With a third-place finish last Saturday at the Anna Invitational,
the YSHS cross country team set three school records and advanced the
boys’ season record to 108–25.
The girls squad started things off in a field of 156
runners. The course featured a lap around an elementary school, two circuits
of a cornfield and a tour of Anna’s all-weather track. Tina Peters
finished 14th.
Hillary Livingston completed her best race of the year
and finished 121st. Lara Donnelly broke 30 minutes for a 5,000 meter race,
Tina Chen placed 134th and Danielle Doubt finished in 142nd place.
In the varsity boys race, five Bulldogs scored and
YSHS just missed the team title. Bellefontaine won the meet with 133 points,
Toledo-area school Kansas Lakota was second with 139, and the Bulldogs
finished third with 141.
Over 230 boys from 27 high schools competed in the
race. Sam Borchers ran with the lead pack of five runners through the
first two miles, eventually settling in with Cedarville senior Kevin Kuhn,
who asked him, with just under a mile to go, “Ready to run?”
Kuhn barely outran Borchers as both runners crashed to the track at the
finish line, Kuhn in 16:03, and Borchers in 16:06.
Andy Peters set another all-time YSHS freshman record
in 16:41 and finish ninth. David Warren placed 14th in 16:56. Carey Dixon
finished 26th in 17:17.
Andy Sontag finished 110th in 18:58 and Ben Adams placed
186th. Zach Reichert out-kicked Matt Halm at the finish line to claim
the last varsity position for this Saturday’s league championships.
In the middle school boys race, Eamon Papania finished
136th with a new lifetime best of 18:24.
Tournament admission fees
The admission fee for fall high school tournament games is $5 for
home and away games. YSHS season passes are not valid.
FC Springs report
FC Springs ’90, the local under-14 boys soccer
team in the Miami Valley Youth Soccer Association, played a perfect scoreless
first half against the division leader, DC Crew of Darke County on Sunday.
But the visitors found the net early in the second half and beat the Springs
4–0.
FC Springs ’95, the local under-9 boys soccer
team in the same league, went head-to-head with the Troy Trojans, the
only other undefeated team in their division, last Sunday and lost their
first game of the year, 2–1. Hunter Young scored the Springs’
only goal.
