OBITUARIES
Martha B. Higby
Martha B. Higby of Inglewood, Calif., died Thursday,
Sept. 30, at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital. She was 98.
Born Martha Louise Brooks at Whitehall Farm on Aug.
14, 1906, she was the seventh of eight children of Jackson and Elizabeth
(Kitty) Todd Brooks. A 1924 graduate of East High School in Xenia, she
was employed as a domestic worker, a cook in the public school system
and retired from Clark Trade Technical College as a member of the custodial
staff. She was a longstanding active member and gifted pianist of both
the First Baptist Church in Yellow Springs and the Second Missionary Baptist
Church in Springfield, where she also participated in the Queen Esther
Bible Club and the Senior Choir.
She always had a pleasant smile and was well-known
and admired for her faith, talent and spirited giving. In Yellow Springs
she played for community events and vocal choral groups, as well as for
commencement exercises at Clark Trade Technical College. She was a talented
seamstress and often modeled her own creations in church and community
fashion shows.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Shelly
Blackman Sr., and her second husband, Ora Higby.
She is survived by her children, Betty Blackman and
David Edward Blackman, both of Inglewood, Calif., and Shelly Blackman
Jr. of Bonita Springs, Fla.; stepchildren, Marguerite Wesley of Hansford,
Calif., and Bennie Higby of Cleveland; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter;
and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her body will be shipped to the Porter-Qualls Funeral
Home. Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m., at Second Missionary
Baptist Church. She will be buried in Glen Forest Cemetery, near the house
in which she was born.
Edwin Markeson
Edwin G. Markeson of Cedarville died peacefully on
Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Greene Memorial Hospital. He was 78.
He was born in Columbus on April 3, 1926, the son of
John M. and Isabel
(Britton) Markeson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy,
serving during World War II. He received a B.A. from Otterbein College
and was the first person to graduate from Antioch College with a master’s
degree. He began teaching in 1950 in the Cedar Cliff Local School District,
transferred to Springfield High School in 1955 and retired from North
High School in 1979.
He was active in the Cedarville High School Booster
Club, the Cedarville Fire Department and the Boy Scouts. He was a member
of the American Legion Post of Cedarville and he served on Cedarville’s
Village Council.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline (Schultz) Markeson;
their children, Linda and Carl Henry, Janice and Mark Corry, Nancy and
Don Remus and David and Barb Markeson; grandchildren, Bill Henry, Mindy
and Ben Graham, Shawn and Matt Corry, Sarah and Matt Stevenson, Michael
and Kate Markeson and Jim Remus; great-grandchildren Morgan, Taylor and
Gunner Henry, Hannah Markeson and Austin Graham; one sister, C.B. Riling;
and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Graveside services were held Saturday, Oct. 2, at the
North Cemetery in Cedarville, with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to the Cedarville Fire Department or to Hospice
of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton 45420.
Richard Tankersley
Major (Ret.) Richard Kent Tankersley of Springfield
died Tuesday, Sept. 28. He was 56.
He was born Dec. 19, 1947, in Dayton, the son of John
W. and Barbara Jane (Wolfe) Tankersley. He graduated from Fairborn High
School, earned a bachelor of arts degree from Miami University and master
of arts degrees from Central Michigan University, the University of Dayton
and the Army Command and General Staff’s College in Kansas. He was
an honored and decorated Marine Corps Rotary and Fixed Wing Pilot and
Infantry Officer.
He served as the assistant principal at Belmont High
School in Dayton. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church
in Yellow Springs.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife, Cathleen; his mother, Barbara
Tankersley of Fairborn; children, Tracy M. and Michael Thurman of Cheraw,
S.C., Carrie M. Tankersley and her fiancé, Casey Lovegrove of Columbia,
S.C., Sara J. Tankersley, Columbia, Emily C. Tankersley of Springfield,
Kaitlyn T. Tankersley of Springfield, Aaron D. and Sarah Tankersley of
Columbia, Tad W. and Sherry Tankersley of Cheraw, and Cody W. Tankersley
of Springfield; grandchildren, Rylie, Cooper, Karlee and Bridget; and
siblings, Cynthia Ann and Terry Miller of Pitchin, Brenda Lee and Wilson
N. Thoele of Huber Heights, Rhonda Gail Horne of Kettering, Sheila Lynn
and Douglas Miller of Xenia, Linda Sue Edwards of Fairborn, Kevin Drew
and Susan Tankersley of Maxwell, Iowa.
A memorial service was held at Belmont High School
on Thursday, Sept. 30, followed by interment at the National Cemetery
in Quantico, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made c/o

Frederick Hinton
Frederick M. Hinton of Springfield died Wednesday,
Sept. 22, at Mercy Hospital. He was 73.
Mr. Hinton retired from Navistar with 48 years of service.
He was a noble and stalwart man to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinley
Hinton and Fredericka (Glascoe) Hinton; father-in-law David Hill Sr.;
a sister, Lolo Daniels; and a son-in-law, Howard Hardiman.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Hinton; children
and their spouses, Frederick Michael and Pam Hinton, Terrie L. and Allan
Godsey, Iris G. and Arthur Crowe, and Christy Hardiman, all of Springfield,
Kyle T. and Gloria Hinton, Paul and Lori Embry, all of Columbus, and William
and Debra Embry of Snelville, Ga.; one brother and sister-in-law, William
and Lynette Hinton of Yellow Springs; sister, Bertha Cheatham of Las Vegas;
mother-in-law, Mary E. Hall of Springfield; the mother of his children,
Marclene Bass-Hinton; sister-in-law, Loretta Thompson; five brothers-in-law
and their wives, David and Evelyn Hill Jr. of Yellow Springs, Robert and
Beatrice Hill, William L. Hill, Louis and Marva Hill and Itan Bass, all
of Springfield; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of
aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews and cousins.
A funeral service was held Monday, Sept. 27, at the
St. John Missionary Baptist Church, with burial following at Ferncliff
Cemetery.
Memorial service for Robert Hammond
A memorial service for Robert D. Hammond of Yellow
Springs will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, 2 p.m., at the Faith Community
United Methodist Church on Country Club Drive in Xenia.
Robert died on Sept. 11, 2004. The family invites all
of his friends to come and remember his life. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to Friends Care Community or the National Kidney Foundation.
