SPORTS roundup
Harriers place 6th out of 25 The trip was designed to see how Yellow Springs stacked up against some of the best harriers in the state. And the answer was “we can compete with the best,” coach Vince Peters said. The Bulldogs showed very well, scoring 185 points and placing 6th out of 25 teams. Sam Borchers came in fifth in 17:11. David Warren also closed well, finishing 16th in 17:59. Andy Peters placed 21st with a time of 18:14. Carey Dixon and Andy Sontag, still recovering from illness, placed 42nd and 99th, respectively, with Dixon logging a final time of 18:48 and Sontag coming in at 20:25. Posting a lifetime best on the hilly 5K course was Ben Adams, who finished in 22:10. In the JV race Logan Sage also ran a lifetime, finishing in 24:28. For the girls team, Tina Peters placed 22nd in 21:58. Rosa Dixon, Danielle Doubt and Hillary Livingston ran in a solid pack for most of the race. At the two-mile mark, near the apex of Lancaster’s highest hill, Doubt led the pack of runners she was racing against at 17:54. However, Dixon was able to finish the strongest and placed 108th in 27:48, while Doubt placed 110th in 28:14, and Livingston finished her first race of the season in 112th in 28:17. Lara Donnelly completed the scoring as the team finished 18th, besting two other schools for the first time this year. Donnelly finished 132nd in 35:11. Big win for boys soccer Kevin Carr opened the scoring floodgates for the Bulldogs when he put back a close parry from Ryan Silvert. Scott Keyes scored once and Duncan Silvert-Noftle had three more goals before the end of the half. The second half began with a classic header by Silvert-Noftle off of a corner kick by Keyes. The move was repeated when Ben Armstrong headed in Nic Huneck’s corner kick. Soon after, James Butler sent a 30-yard lob into the far-post. At 12–0, David Suzel closed out the night’s scoring with 2 goals from the left wing. On the defensive end, Butler, Michael Hosket, Brandon Carver-Halley, David Suzel, Max Buchwalder and Joey Lurie completely shut down Middletown’s offense, giving Bulldog goalie John “The Grips” Pamplin his third shutout of the season. The Bulldogs are 6–1 overall and 3–0 in the MBC. Girls soccer scores shutout The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead, leaving Middletown with no room to adjust. The Lady ’Dogs scored 3 goals in the first half, beginning with a big one from Emily Dozeman on an assist from Laura Garcia. Emily Foubert scored the next 2. Megan Burrick scored a goal in the second half, on an assist by Lauren Miles. The defense was lead by Tricia McLinden, Jennifer Smith, Olivia Smith and India Scarver. The Lady Bulldogs had the opportunity to play new positions, working well together to pull out a solid win, coach MacKenzie Reynolds said. The team’s season record is 5–2–2. Football team falls to Fairbanks The Bulldogs’ second touchdown came in the second quarter on a 57-yard pass from quarterback Jake Fulton to Kyle Truitt. But it was a pace the Bulldogs could not maintain, and the team lost, 46–12. Turnovers were a problem for YSHS. Three interceptions, a fumble and a muffed punt return all led to scores by Fairbanks. Hull rushed 16 times for 168 yards and a touchdown. Fulton was 2 for 11 passing for 61 yards, with a touchdown and 3 interceptions. On defense, Jerrico Stubblefield had 13 tackles, Josh Foster had 9, Cody Johnson 7, and Kilan Brown 6. Stubblefield also blocked an extra point. Volleyball team splits two After winning the first two games, the Lady Bulldogs thought they had an easy win, relaxed and never recovered, coach Shirley Martin said. The Lady Bulldogs also had trouble serving. Katy McEvoy, Evin Wimberly, Niquelle Orr and Megan Lents were high scorers for the game. The team came back to win a grudge match over Middletown Christian on Monday, 25–20, 25–5, 25–23. After losing to Middletown earlier this month, the Lady Bulldogs bounced back, skillfully finding open spots and serving aggressively. They won by playing a conservative, steady game. Orr and Wimberly were the high scorers. Middle school volleyball tri-match McKinney plays Middletown Christian at 9 a.m., Middletown plays Jefferson at 10 a.m., and Jefferson plays the Lady Bulldogs at 11 a.m. General admission is $3 and $1 for students and seniors. FC Springs unbeaten The U-9 FC Springs boys soccer team is in first place in the Miami Valley Youth Soccer Association, one of only two teams to remain undefeated after three weeks of play. Last week the Springs defeated United Thunder of Lebanon, 5–1, and beat the Inferno SC Fire out of Wilmington, 11–0. |
