SPORTS round up Volleyball team wins four Last week the YSHS volleyball team won all four of its games, beating Middletown Christian, Xenia Nazarene, Cedarville and Jefferson. The Lady Bulldogs are now 6–1. “We had to go the distance for the first time this season,” coach Shirley Martin said, referring to the game against Middletown Christian on Sept. 9. “It was truly a well-fought battle on both sides.” The Lady Bulldogs won three out of the match’s five games, 25–19, 25–20, 25–27, 23–25 and 15–10. On Saturday the Lady Bulldogs competed in their only tri-match of the season, defeating both Xenia Nazarene and Cedarville. Yellow Springs bested Xenia in two games, 25–11 and 25–10. The Lady Bulldogs excelled in team offense, with all players scoring in the game: Megan Pierce, Katy McEvoy, Ashlee Jackson, Alisha Lucas, Jessyln Yelton, Megan Lents, Evin Wimberly, Olivia Dixon, Niquelle Orr, and Allie Robles. Right after playing Xenia Nazarene, the girls’ winning streak continued against Cedarville. After dropping the first game 11–25, the Lady Bulldogs rebounded to win 25–17 and 25–8. Every Lady ’Dog scored during the team’s victory over Jefferson on Monday. YSHS won in three straight, 25–7, 25–15 and 25–11. Bulldogs win two on the road The YSHS boys soccer team won two away games last week, regrouping after its early season loss two weeks ago. After beating Southeastern and Ridgeville Christian, the team is now 4–1. In a lopsided, 13–0 win against Southeastern on Sept. 9, Duncan Silvert-Noftle kicked in 5 goals, Ben Armstrong and Noah Woodburn each had 2, and Michael Hosket, David Suzel, James Butler and Abeo Miller picked up 1 each. Picking up assists were Scott Keyes with 2, and Joe Lurie, Hosket and Woodburn with 1 each. The team’s defensive line of Nick Huneck, Hosket, Suzel, Woodburn, Butler, Silvert-Noftle, Lurie and Brandon Carver-Halley allowed no shots on goal, giving goalie John Pamplin his second shutout of the season. On Saturday, the team, which has finished first in the Metro Buckeye Conference two years in a row, travelled to Ridgeville Christian for its first game against a conference opponent. A mishandled shot in the first half put the ’Dogs down 1–0 at the half, but relentless offensive pressure in the second half was finally rewarded with 30 minutes remaining, when Hosket made one of his trademark throw-ins to Silvert-Noftle, sending him into the right corner, where Silvert-Noftle blasted a shot off a defender and into the near side of the netting, tying the game at 1. With less than three minutes to go, Huneck connected with Silvert-Noftle up front, sending him to the goal to net the game-winner. The JV Bulldogs last week picked up two victories to improve their season record to 2–1, beating Emmanuel Christian 5–0 and Vandalia Butler 1–0.
