Football team loses home opener

Quarterback Jake Fulton rushing through a hole in the Bulldogs’ offensive line during Yellow Springs’ 39–13 loss to Cincinnati Christain last Friday at home.

The YSHS football team’s home opener on Friday showed that the Bulldogs’ defense is built to last, but the offense needs to oil its bearings.

The defense kept the score close in the first half against Cincinnati Christian before the Cougars pulled away in the second half to easily win, 39–13.

Before either team could get warmed up, Bulldog Kyle Truitt was tackled on the field and sent to the hospital with a dislocated shoulder.

After recovering a fumble on the ’Dogs’ 10-yard line, the Cougars scored a touchdown to take a 7–0 lead in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, Jerrico Stubblefield intercepted a Cougar pass, but the Bulldogs were not able to spin it into gold. Two minutes before the half, the Cougars scored another touchdown from 10 yards out to take a 14–0 lead.

The teams traded the ball back and forth before the Cougars managed to inch down the field and scored a third touchdown, again from the 10. Martin Bakari blocked the extra point.

Deep in the third quarter, with the score 26–0, Jerrico Stubblefield grabbed his second interception, giving the Bulldogs hope of climbing back. Jacob Fulton completed a seven-yard pass to Aaron Willis. After a pass interference call on the Cougars put the Bulldogs at the Cincinnati 15, Yellow Springs inched steadily down the field.

On a fourth down from the 5, Fulton ran for the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the night. Scott Keyes made the extra point and put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard, 20–7.

Linebacker, Ian Ferguson raised Cain to pump up the team and get the crowd behind the Bulldogs, who had the final quarter to make a comeback. But within 10 minutes, the Cougars scored three more touchdowns to lead 39–7. The Cougars sent their second-teamers out, and the Bulldogs’ Josh Foster broke through to score on a 86-yard run.

“They came to play and we didn’t,” YSHS coach Jerome Crosswhite said. Cincinnati Christian is a good team, he said, adding that after a few Yellow Springs players were sidelined, the younger players on the team could not effectively replace them.

“I’m disappointed we lost, but I see some good things, too,” he said. “We just have to put on our chin straps, buckle them up and get out there again.”

Fulton went 3 for 15 for 40 yards and threw 2 interceptions. Willis got 2 passes for 22 yards. Joe Lawhorn had the other catch for 7 yards. Bakari rushed for 40 yards on 12 carries, and Josh Foster had 104 yards on 8 carries.

Ferguson and Drew Stratton each recovered a fumble. Cody Johnson had 9 tackles, Stratton had 8 and Ferguson and Bakari had 5 tackles each.

YSHS sports roundup

Volleyball team wins opener
The YSHS girls volleyball team topped the Belmont Bisons, 3–0, to win its first game of the year on Monday.

Both teams had opening-day jitters, and the first game was evenly matched, with the Lady Bulldogs edging out a 25–22 victory. The Lady Bulldogs took control and won the next two games, 25–7 and 25–11.

High scorers were Olivia Dixon, Alicia Lucas, Allie Robles, Katy McEvoy and Niquelle Orr. The team had outstanding blocking from Megan Lents and Ashley Jackson and impressive digs from Allie Robles.

Tough start for girls soccer
Greeneview presented a steep challenge for the YSHS girls soccer team, dominating the team’s Aug. 24 match, 5–1.

Greeneview scored in the first several minutes of the game. The Lady ’Dogs tied the score eight minutes into the first half on a goal by Erin Silvert-Noftle. Paia LaPalombara had the assist.

On a rough day on the field, goalie Lila Jenson took a kick to the face on a goal shot from close in and had to sit out for a period. YSHS was also missing co-captain Emily Foubert, who was injured, but the rest of the team compensated well for the absence.

Saturday’s home game against Urbana was rained out.

Boys soccer starts 2–0
The boys soccer team opened its season last Tuesday with a hard-fought 2–0 decision over the visiting Greeneview Rams.

Senior scoring ace Duncan Silvert-Noftle opened the Bulldogs’ scoring account when he headed in Scott Keyes’s corner kick five minutes into the action. Just before the break Keyes sent Silvert-Noftle to the nets again, putting the Bulldogs up 2–0 at the end of the first half.

Early in the second half both teams had a player ejected for fighting and, therefore, finished the remainder of the game playing a man down. Play was stopped for about a half hour because of the fight.

Just as the YSHS offense owned the first half, the team’s defense, led by seniors Mike Hosket and Nic Huneck, juniors David Suzel and John Pamplin, and sophomore Brandon Carver-Halley, shut down the Rams in the second half.

On Monday, the Bulldogs exacted a 5–1 measure of revenge against the Greenon Knights, the only team to defeat YSHS last year during the regular season.

Greenon scored first before the ’Dogs came storming back to take a 3-1 lead on a goal by Keyes and two by Silvert-Noftle. The Bulldogs were ahead 4–1 early in the half, and scored their final goal, another one by Silvert-Noftle, on an assist from Ryan Silvert.

The YSHS JV squad lost to Greenon’s JV 1–0. YSHS controlled most of the game, but gave up a goal late in the second half and could not solve the Knights’ defense.

Sam Borchers wins Fun Run

The 19th annual Village Fun Run experienced a youth movement with two of its youngest winners ever.

YSHS sophomore Sam Borchers became the youngest male winner when the 15-year-old led almost 50 villagers on the two-mile loop through town on Aug. 29. He covered the race in 10:40.

The only other sophomore to ever win the Fun Run was YSHS alumni Grant Scott. But the big difference was in the time. Scott’s winning time in 1999 was 11:27. Fairborn eighth-grader Elizabeth Heiber was the surprise winner of the women’s division, finishing 11th overall in just 14:07. Heiber is a longtime member of the Miami Valley Track Club, which is based in the village.

David Warren, co-captain of the YSHS boys cross country team, finished second overall in the men’s competition in 10:50. Carey Dixon, the other co-captain, was third in 11:16.

Susan Heiber, coach of Huber Heights’ Junior High School cross country teams, finished second in the women’s competition. Heiber was the first master female competitor, finishing 18th overall in 15:15. Danielle Doubt placed third in the women’s division and 20th overall in 15:34.

Other division winners included Eamon Papania, a eighth-grader, who, competing in his first race, finished 29th overall in an excellent 18:57. Miami Valley Track Club runner Melanie Chin won the elementary school girls competition in 14:49. Rory Papania took control of the elementary school boys division and placed 26th overall in 18:19. Mike Duricy was the first master’s competition and placed sixth overall in 12:52.
