last Saturday at the Bryan Community Center basketball courts.
Campers were recognized for hard work, good attitude,
good participation, skilled execution and working well with others.
Tammy Smith presented Brittany Sheets with the Arla
K. Smith Award, in honor of her daughter who died last spring in a car
accident and whose good sportsmanship served as an exemplary model for
others. Vicky Stubblefield presented her son Jerimiha Stubblefield with
the Bryon S. Stubblefield Award in honor of her husband, who also died
last spring. Bryon’s longtime commitment to coaching and mentoring
youth through sports inspired his family and many in his community to

Brad Newsome.
Tina Peters places second at national junior
track meet
Yellow Springs High School junior Tina Peters
finished second at the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Championships
last week in Eugene, Ore.
Peters was one of seven Miami Valley Track Club athletes
participating in the meet.
She earned All-American status in the Intermediate
Women’s division (15 and 16 year olds) of the 5,000-meter racewalk
with a time of 27:18.73. She also earned a spot in the USATF Selection
Pool, a short list of athletes eligible to join the U.S. team to compete
in Marrakech, Morocco, in the 2005 IAAF World Youth Track & Field
Championships.
A member of the U.S. Junior National Team, Peters will
make her first international trip for a meet against Canada in Edmonton,
Canada, on Aug. 28.
Three other Miami Valley Track Club members also earned
All-American status, two in the racewalks. Both of the walkers, Danielle
Doubt and Andy Peters, will be freshman Yellow Springs High School.
Doubt, competing in her first national championships,
finished seventh (top eight earn a place on the awards podium) in the
youth division (for 13 and 14 year olds) in the 3,000-meter race walk
in 18:03.20. That time was a personal best for Doubt.
Andy Peters, Tina’s younger brother, competed
in three events, finishing sixth in the boys 3,000-meter racewalk (13
and 14 year olds) in 18:06.75. He also achieved personal bests in the
1,500 and 3,000 runs, finishing in 4:51.44 and 10:23.92, respectively,
but did not advance to the finals in those events.
Also competing in the walks but not advancing was Aprile
Doubt, who is in her first year of racewalking. A sixth-grader at Mills
Lawn School, Doubt surprised everyone by qualifying for nationals. She
finished 12th in the 1,500 racewalk for 11 and 12 year olds in 9:54.37.
The final member of the Miami Valley Track Club to
advance to the awards platform was Cedarville High School freshman Katie
Gerhardt. Gerhardt, seeded 12th going into the finals of the discus, placed
seventh overall. Her best throw, recorded in the fourth round, was a toss
of 103 feet two inches.
Cedarville senior Kevin Kuhn also competed for the
club. Kuhn finished the summer season undefeated in the steeplechase,
winning the second (slow) section of the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Kevin’s
time of 6:27.91 was a 13-second improvement over his Midwest Regionals
victory and earned a 10th-place finish.
Kuhn finished the 1,500 run in 4:13.55 in the preliminaries,
and while also a personal best, he did not advance to the finals.
The seventh member of the club to advance to the national
championships was 10-year-old Michelle McDaniel, who finished 32nd in
the javelin.
