Clara A. Layton
Clara A. Layton
died Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the Dorothy Love Retirement community in Sidney.
She was 94.
Born on her family’s farm outside New Knoxville,
on Aug. 23, 1909, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna Deerhake.
Clara was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School
and Ohio State University, where she received her degree in elementary
education and math and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa as well as Pi Lambda
Theta. She first taught in three one-room schoolhouses in Chapel, Owl
Creek and Brookside in Auglaize County until their consolidation into
the New Knoxville school system.
She left teaching upon her marriage to J. William Layton
on June 16, 1939. She resumed teaching in 1951 in the Fairborn school
system. She taught fourth grade in the old Central School and then in
East Elementary until her retirement in 1974. She continued to serve the
community as a member of AAUW, the State Teachers Association, the OSU
Honor Society and the Fairborn Senior Center, where she was honored in
1989 for her contributions. She was a member of the Trinity United Church
of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant
daughter; four brothers and three sisters, LeRoy Deerhake, Lydia Kuck,
Raymond Deerhake, Dr. Homer Deerhake, Mary Schmidt, Mildred Jauert and
Vernon Deerhake.
She is survived by her daughters and their spouses,
Mary and Alan Borthwick of New York City, and Dorothy Schumm Innis and
Richard Innis of Patriot, Ohio; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and
a sister, Edna Parmelee of Meridian, Conn.
Services were held Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Belton
Funeral Home in Fairborn, with burial following in Glen Forest Cemetery
in Yellow Springs. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made
to Trinity United Church of Christ in Fairborn, Fairborn Senior Citizens,
American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
Jim Oldham memorial
A memorial service for Jim Oldham will be held Saturday, Aug. 14,
2 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church. Friends and family will share
memories and music and celebrate the life of Jim, who lived in Yellow
Springs from 1957 until his death last April at age 94.
