Senior Center receives large anonymous gift

The Yellow Springs Senior Center recently learned that an anonymous donor has provided it with a $243,000 endowment, said Connie Pelekoudas, who is chairing the center’s current endowment campaign committee.

The funds were donated to the Dayton Foundation, where they will be managed, Pelekoudas said. The center will receive income on the endowment’s investment, he said.

Pelekoudas said that the news of the donated endowment came as a surprise.

“We are tremendously grateful to the creator of this fund,” Pelekoudas said. “It’s a strong expression of confidence for the center and its programs. It will help secure the future of needed services in our community.”

Pelekoudas announced the new endowment just two days after the Senior Center launched the public phase of “Seniors for Tomorrow,” an effort to establish an endowment for the center. The center hopes to raise $500,000 in gifts and pledges this year and another $500,000 in the next couple of years. Pelekoudas said on Monday that the center has raised $190,000 in gifts and pledges.

The center held an open house on Saturday to introduce the new campaign. The endowment would provide the center with a permanent annual source of income that would help the center better plan and provide additional services to seniors, when possible.

The $243,000 endowment at the Dayton Foundation is not being considered a part of the Seniors for Tomorrow campaign, Pelekoudas said. While the funds are an “important complement” to the campaign, the donation “does not diminish the need for a permanent Yellow Springs Senior Center endowment fund.”

The campaign committee’s goal of reaching $500,000 this year “remains unchanged,” he said.
