OBITUARIES

Richard Wolf

Dr. Richard Melnick Wolf of Larchmont, N.Y., died on July 17. He was 69.

Dick graduated from Antioch College in 1957 and married Marie Flueckiger in 1958. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and was professor of statistics and evaluation in education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He was also a respected member of the International Academy of Education and the International Education Association.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marie; children, Robert and Barbara Wolf of Rye, N.Y., and Susan Raegen Wolf of Larchmont, N.Y.; and siblings, Harton and Jan Wolf of Richmond, Va., and Pittsburgh, and Fran and Bruce Rickenbach of Yellow Springs.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Antioch College Endowment Fund.

Alka Lou Waugh

Alka Lou (Gibson) Waugh of Wellston died Thursday, July 29, at her residence. She was 52.

Born Oct. 17, 1951, she was the daughter of Robert Eugene Gibson and Alice Elizabeth Nichols.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Waugh; sisters, Violet Shepherd and Ruth Viers; and one brother, William Clayton.

She is survived by daughters and a son-in-law, Tammy and Doug Merrill, Roberta Barnes and Bobbie Jo Waugh; stepson, Chris Matthews; siblings, Anna Lucas of Hillsboro, Rvena and Robert Perkins of Springfield, Erma and Bill Hill, Dwight Gibson of New Carlisle, Alfred and Patty Gibson of Jackson, Robert Gibson of Fairborn, John Gibson of Yellow Springs, Chester Gibson of Fairborn, Milton and Karen Gibson of Springfield and Winfred Gibson of New Carlisle; and many grandchildren, aunts and uncles.

Services were held Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Elsnaugle-Lewis Funeral Home in Jackson, with burial following in Old Coalton Cemetery.

Rob Carlisle

Rob Carlisle of New Carlisle died Saturday, July 31, at Hospice of Dayton, after a two-year battle with melanoma. He was surrounded by his family and friends. He was 37.

Born on Oct. 21, 1966, in Springfield, he was the son of Bob and Ginny (Dixon) Carlisle.

He was a member of First Baptist Church. He worked with Western-Southern Financial Group in Kettering, where he was a LUTCF provider. He was a basketball and softball coach with the Tecumseh Local School District and volunteered in school events with his kids.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

He is survived by his parents; wife, Sherry (Hale) Carlisle; two daughters, Erica Lynn and Lindsey Renée; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark Carlisle of Terre Haute, Ind., Tim and Joann Carlisle of California and Chris and Kaoru Carlisle of Dayton; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Liz Hale and Patrick Wolfe of Yellow Springs and Debby and Andy Heister of South Charleston; uncles and aunts, Wayne and JoAnn Dixon of Springfield and Ted and Patty Hitt of Springfield; and parents-in-law, Rick and Sandy Hale of Springfield.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 5, 11:30 a.m., at the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home in Springfield. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made for melanoma research to the James Cancer Hospital, c/o The James Development Office, 300 West 10th Avenue, B-13-4-459, Columbus, Ohio 43210.

Martha Chapman

Martha G. Chapman of Springfield died in her residence on Friday, July 30. She was 87.

Born in Clark County on Oct. 15, 1917, she was the daughter of Harry and Agnes (Otstot) Geron. She retired from Morris Bean & Company in 1982.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul T.; sisters, Katharine G. Hutchins and Mildred G. Wolcott; and her brother, Harry E. Geron.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held for the family, with burial in Clifton Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Jackson Lytle & Williams Funeral Home in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to donors’ favorite charity.

Elizabeth B. Houseman

Elizabeth B. Houseman of Springfield died Monday, Aug. 2, in the Alterra Sterling House. She was 88.

She was born June 17, 1916 in Fayette County, Ohio, the daughter of John L. and Cora (Woods) Young. She retired from Navistar in 1981 and prior to that worked for Robbins & Myers Company for a number of years.

Betty was a former member of the United Auto Workers, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1031 Auxiliary and was an avid bowler and seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robin; a brother, Everett Young; and three sisters, Myra Smith, Mary Dotson and Edna Young.

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Jessica Houseman of Yellow Springs, Mike and Lori Houseman, Springfield, Nick and Debbie Houseman, North Hampton, Ohio, and Tom and Mary Houseman, Christiansburg; a daughter and her spouse, Virginia and Marybeth Miller, South Vienna; a brother and sister-in-law, Jon and Clara Young; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call in the Conroy Funeral Home, Springfield, from 4–7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 5. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, in the funeral home. Burial in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Catherine Geis

Catherine Geis of Yellow Springs died Wednesday, July 28, in Heartland of Urbana. She was 91.

Catherine was born July 6, 1913, in Yellow Springs, the daughter of Charles and Frances (Kern) Geis. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was employed as a clerk with the Village of Yellow Springs, retiring in 1980.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George Geis.

She is survived by her siblings, Betty and Charles Ryan of Yellow Springs, Helen and Richard Sill of Circleville and Carl and Phyllis Geis of Ocala, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, July 31, at St. Paul Catholic Church, with burial following in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Henry L. Peck

Henry L. Peck of South Charleston died Sunday, July 18, as a result of an auto accident. He was 65.

Born on July 31, 1938, in Georgetown, Texas, he was the son of Joe and Freda (Bowman) Peck. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a graduate of the University of Texas. He retired as a translator from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base after 28 years of service.

Henry was the leader of the Miamiblasmusik Polka Band and was a member of the Sierra Club. He was also a longtime member of the Yellow Springs Community Band, playing the trombone. He often made tapes of the band’s concerts.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ward and Alson Peck.

He is survived by his wife, Judy (Reiter) Peck; sister, Celesta Porritt of Boulder, Colo.; and two brothers, Charles Peck and Gerald Peck, both of Austin, Texas.

A memorial service was held Sunday, July 25, at the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home in Springfield.

Jim Oldham memorial

A memorial service for Jim Oldham will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, 2 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church. Friends and family will share memories and music and celebrate the life of Jim, who lived in Yellow Springs from 1957 until his death last April at age 94.
