OBITUARIES
Cathlee Vance
Cathlee A. Vance died in Hawaii early Saturday morning
on April 10, from undetermined causes after a long illness. She was 43.
Cathlee was born on July 31, 1960. She graduated from
Antioch College and worked at the Organic Grocery in the late 80s. She
was a very beautiful, electric and eccentric personality and had many
friends in Yellow Springs. Those who knew her will miss her very much.
She is survived by her mother, Sally Cabiness, and
her father, John Franklin Vance Jr.
Cathlee left behind an extensive collection of personal
belongings, some of which she willed to a number of institutions, teachers,
friends and family. If you believe that you may be named in the will,

A celebration of the life of Cathlee Vance will be
held by family and friends at the home of Patricia Kambitsch and Peter
Jones, 4098 Wagner Road, Dayton, on Saturday, July 31, starting at 7:30
p.m. This is an open wake for friends at Cathlee’s request, and
people are invited to bring photographs and mementos.
Gary Blau
Gary Blau died in Puna, Hawaii, July 1, after a brief
illness. He was 50.
Gary was born Aug. 16, 1953, and raised in Yellow Springs.
He attended the Antioch School and the Yellow Springs public schools.
He lived in Hawaii on the big island for the past 23
years, where he worked as an artist making lamps and started a sugar cane
juice business.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and
Marcelle Blau, of Yellow Springs, who died in 1987 and 1988, respectively.
Gary is survived by a brother, David Blau of Chapel
Hill, N.C., a niece and a nephew, Kathryn Blau and Michael Blau of Chapel
Hill, and an aunt, Elaine Simel of New York.
Services for family and friends were held on July 10
at Gary’s home in Pahoa, Hawaii.
Betty J. Jones
Betty J. (Long) Jones of Springfield died on Saturday,
July 17, in her residence. She was 73.
She was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Yellow Springs, the
daughter of Dave Long and Josephine Scott.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter,
Carol Ann (Banks) Walker.
She is survived by her four daughters, Trina Hutchinson-Walker,
Sherry (Kenneth) Reed, both of Springfield, Shawn Hutchinson of Columbus,
and Candy Jones of California; two sons, Gary Tolliver of California and
Henry (Joyce) Alexander of Dayton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for family and friends were held
on July 24 at Porter-Qualls Funeral Homes, Inc., Springfield. Upon Betty’s
wishes, she will be cremated.
