Sea Dogs continue ‘lovely season’
By Ali Thomas
The Sea Dogs lost to Clinton County, the powerhouse
of the league, on July 1. They bounced back, however, on July 8, to beat
Greenacres.
“We’re having a lovely season,”
coach Dave Wishart said. “The kids are having fun and they’re
swimming well.”
The last regular meet of the season was held July 13.
Championships will be held on July 24 at Wittenberg.
The depth and power of this year’s swimmers give
the Sea Dogs a chance to have their best season ever.

Track club members qualify for national championships
The Miami Valley Track Club competed in the Region
5 Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Farmington Hills, Mich.,
last weekend. Of the athletes from Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky,
the top three finishers in each category qualified for the national championships.
In the 10 and younger group, Miranda Russell placed
first in the 1500 racewalk in 11:45.2, and Lois Miller took second in
12:22. Miller placed fifth in the 1500 run. Megan Vogel, also in the youngest
age group, ran the 800 meter. In the field, Michelle McDaniel claimed
third in the mini-javelin, with a best throw of 11.46 meters. She also
competed in the shotput, with a best effort of 4.75 meters.
Miami Valley’s 11- and 12-year-old athletes included
Aprile Doubt, who won the racewalk for her category in 10:20.8, followed
by teammate Lauren Morrow in 11:05. Sisters Allison and Melanie Chin raced
the 1500 and 800, respectively, and Allison was the runner-up in her event
in 6:18.31.
Danielle Doubt and Andy Peters, who will be freshmen
at YSHS this fall, each won their racewalks in the 13- and 14-year-old
category. Peters completed the 3000 race in 17:25.43, Doubt in 19:21.7.
Peters qualified for nationals in the racewalk, as well as in the 1500
run and the pole vault. In the same age group, Katie Gerhardt won the
shotput with a 10.28 toss and the discus with a 31.28 throw. Elisabeth
Heiber also competed in the 1500 meter run.
The club’s 15- and 16-year-olds dominated the
steeplechase competition. Zach Clericus won in 7:56, and Ben McSherry
placed third in 9:12.3. McSherry also took third in the javelin. Christina
Peters continued the racewalk success, winning the 5000 meter in 27:25,
a new regional championship record.
Kevin Kuhn was the 17- and 18-year-old steeplechase
champion, with a 6:46.4 run. He also won the 1500 run in 4:21. Tiffany
Sollman completed the racewalking sweep, winning the 17–18 age group
in 35:11.4 and qualifying in the triple jump. Jeremy Gillespie was runner-up
in the 400 meter dash, with a 54.08.
The USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships
will be held July 27–Aug. 1 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
What a Major League week
By Bob Morrison
What a week we had in the majors. Two very close games;
two injuries from baseballs — one hit, one thrown; one EMS squad
run; and some very fine pitching, hitting and fielding.
The week began as expected, with a Reds’ victory,
but by a much smaller margin. The Cubs kept the game reasonably close
with good pitching and good defense. Ethan Brown picked up another win
for the Reds. The only runs in the 13–2 game for the Cubs came against
Jake Fulton, who pitched one inning. The Reds’ Kevin Sikes-Gilbert,
Todd Sheets, Brown and Joe Fugate combined for 8 doubles, a triple and
3 home runs (Sheets had all 3). Lauren Miles pitched well for the Cubs
and took the loss. Chris Johnson tripled and Carl Wiener and S.J. Scott
singled for the Cubs’ only hits.
The first game on Saturday was marred by balls hitting
two people who happened to be father and son. Alex Turner was hit in the
right eye while playing second (he’s OK) and his dad, Dave Turner,
was hit in the lip while coaching first. (After going to the hospital
to receive stitches he’s OK, too.) After a delay, the Yankees won
the seesaw battle, 15–13. Lucas Donnell pitched for the Yankees.
Conor Stratton had 3 singles and scored 3 runs. Yosef Johnson singled,
tripled and scored twice. Asa Casenhiser had a single, 2 doubles and 4
RBI.
Cody Evans took the loss. The A’s struggled mightily
to win this game for Coach Dave but came up just short. Josh Foster hit
a massive 3-run home run that is still going. Alex Nickels had 2 hits
and scored twice. Brandon Semler, Sara Adkins, Will Turner and Ryan Phillips
each scored once. Jamie Kitzmiller had maybe his best day yet, playing
superbly behind the plate, getting 3 hits and scoring 3 runs.
In Saturday’s second game, the Cubs beat the
Indians 8–7. Jonathan Haller was cruising for the Indians and had
a 7–2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when he began to tire.
Brother Isaac relieved him and took a tough loss.
Shaquil Collett made a catch in the outfield on a ball
that several weeks ago would have been a sure hit. Time and again the
Cubs made key defensive plays that stranded Indian runners. Alana Harrah
did her usual fantastic job behind the plate, and Lauren Miles got the
win by pitching a complete game.
The Indians hit the ball well, fielded the ball well
and are probably the team of the future with so many rookies. Tony Parker
was 3 for 3. Patrick Morrissey had a hit, Isaac Haller was 2 for 3, brother
Jonathan had 2 doubles, Jake Trumbull was 2 for 3 and was all over the
place at short, gobbling up everything that came near him. Kevin Greco
— what more can we say about his prowess at catcher — singled,
stole a base and scored a run. Jeremiah Shaw had his first major league
hit.
Sunday’s games were rained out. Week Six coming
up. See you at the ballpark!
