Girls summer basketball clinics
Basketball clinics for girls entering fourth through
sixth grade this fall will continue on Friday, June 25, 6–8 p.m.,
in the Bryan Community Center gym. Additional practices will be held on
July 9, 23 and 30, and Aug. 13 and 27.
The clinics complement the KTC (Kenton Trace Conference)
traveling team program and are designed to provide instruction and skills
building for both girls new to basketball and those in the KTC program.
Each clinic will consist of a combination of fundamentals instruction
and drills, dribbling and shooting games, and scrimmage.
Players can join at any time during the summer. For
more information, call Rich Miller at 767-2049.
Busy week two for majors
By Bob Morrison
On Thursday, June 17, the Reds and Yankees played a
makeup game with the Yankees beating the Reds, 4–2, in a pitchers’
duel. Lucas Donnell pitched four shutout innings to get the win. Addison
Pettiford had 2 RBI and scored a run, providing all the runs the Yanks
would need.
Kevin Sikes-Gilbert pitched a great game for the Reds
but picked up the loss, and Ethan Brown shut down the Yanks in relief.
The outcome of the game was in doubt till the final
out: the Reds had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the
sixth when Asa Casenhiser caught a fly ball in foul territory to end the
game.
There was a doubleheader on Saturday, June 19. In the
first game the Reds bounced back from their defeat on Thursday to beat
the Indians, 15–12. Kevin Sikes-Gilbert started the game and got
the win for the Redlegs, with excellent relief by Jake Fugate and Matt
Finn. Todd Sheets and Finn both hit 2-run homers to contribute to the
win.
The Indians started to hit in this game with contributions
by many of the players. Jonathan Haller started the game and pitched well.
Kevin Greco was masterful behind the plate. Nathaniel Reed played an awesome
deep second base and Kenneth Sonner was solid in left.
In the second game, the A’s defeated the Cubs,
23–13. The Cubs’ pitchers gave up 8 walks and the A’s
took full advantage, scoring in every inning. John Michael-Malone, Josh
Foster and Otis Rutley combined for 6 hits and 10 RBI; Foster hit a 3-run
home run. Jamie Kitzmiller started and got the win for the A’s,
recording 5 strikeouts; Jeremiah Stubblefield and Aaron Fletcher each
had 2 hits.
There was another doubleheader on Sunday. In the first
game the Reds beat the Yankees, 9–3, then took a well-deserved rest
after playing three games in four days. Reds pitcher Ethan Brown threw
a complete game for the win; Kevin Sikes-Gilbert led off the game with
a home run, not a good harbinger of things to come for the Yanks. Jake
Fugate was 2–3, with 2 runs scored, and Jenny Barnett made the catch
of the game to end an inning with the Yankees threatening. As she came
off the field she was mobbed by her teammates.
Starter Yosef Johnson took the loss for the Yanks but
pitched well. Conor Stratton had 2 hits and scored a run; Addison Pettiford
contributed a sacrifice fly for an RBI.
The last game of the week was by all accounts the best.
The game was called for time at two hours with the Athletics and the Indians
tied at 13.
The Indians proved their last game was no fluke by
jumping out to an 8–1 lead after the first inning. Over the next
three innings the A’s chipped away and finally tied the game in
the fourth. The Indians scored 5 in the top of the fifth to seemingly
assure their fist victory, but the A’s came roaring back in the
bottom of the fifth.
With two out and the game on the line, Jonathan Haller
struck out Josh Foster to send all the fans home happy. Cody Evans started
for the A’s and struck out 6. Will and Alex Turner, Brandon Semler
and Evans spearheaded the offense. There was sparkling defensive play
by Jamie Kitzmiller at catcher, Lucas Blanchard-Glueckert at shortstop,
Sara Evans in right and Foster in center.
The Tribe’s starter Isaac Haller pitched three
innings, and Jonathan Haller relieve for the last two. Kevin Greco continued
to excel at catcher; Devin Massie was 3–3; Jake Trumble played unbelievable
defense and ran the bases with abandon; Patrick Morrissey had a huge RBI
triple.
Week number three is coming up. Don’t miss a
minute of it. Come out and see our terrific children play a quality game.
See you at the ballpark!
