Major elements
of the college’s renewal plan:
Experiential learning communities
• An ELC will consist of 30 to 45 students and two to three faculty
members from different academic disciplines
• An ELC will “focus on an important problem or theme from
multidisciplinary perspectives”; students would have the flexibility
to pursue interests related to the themes of an ELC and to collaborate
with other students on projects that they design
• Student majors will be replaced by “individualized plans
of students” developed at the end of students’ first year
Community-based co-ops
• Co-ops will be clustered in selected host communities, managed
onsite by at least one staff or faculty member; each community could have
20 to 30 students
• Antioch will develop relationships with 8 to 12 host communities
• Co-ops can be related to students’ ELCs
• A central co-op department in Yellow Springs will continue to
manage the program
• Alumni volunteer organizations will be developed to support host
community activities
• Students can develop their own co-ops in places other than host
communities
Physical improvements
Includes $3 million investment in new technology infrastructure. Plan
also suggests Antioch invest $50.5 million in campus improvements in two
phases:
Phase 1:
• New apartment-style residence halls to replace President’s
dorms: $3 million
• New student union, where Spalt Hall is currently located; includes
demolition of Spalt: $10 million
• Convert current student union into classroom space: $1.5 million
• Library renovations, including new technology center: $2 million
• Renovate Curl Gym into health and rec center:
$2 million
• Renovate North Hall: $1.5 million
Phase 2:
• New science building: $15 million
• New residence halls: $4.5 million
• Renovate Birch, Mills and Kelly Halls, Main Building, McGregor,
among others: $11 million
Cultural and intellectual freedom
• Initiative would transform Antioch into an institution that “embeds
cultural and intellectual freedom”
• Responsibilities and staff of director of multicultural affairs
would expand
• New faculty endowed chairs will be created
• Diversity skills training and support services will be developed
Increase enrollment
• Boost enrollment to 900 by 2014
• Strategy includes $2 million “guerilla marketing”
campaign; assessment of student services and residential life; and increased
admissions staff
Governance issues
• Antioch University Board of Trustees will discuss “the basic
concept and structure of the University, the College’s relation
to the University” and other Antioch campuses
• A task force will be formed to review the college and community
governance system
