’Dogs fail to advance to state meet
YSHS distance runner Sam Borchers
started the 3200 run with the lead pack last Friday at the Division III
Piqua regional finals.
Borchers, a freshman, ran his
first mile in 5:01 and stayed with the top 10 runners before getting gapped
with a slower pack at the second mile. He held ninth place until the last
straight of the last lap, when he heard YSHS coach Vince Peters yelling
that he needed to finish in at least eighth place to medal.
“He knew right what to
say at the time,” Borchers said. “He knows a lot of what makes
me able to run is my ego.”
The ego wanted the medal, so
Borchers obliged with enough kick to pass not one but two runners in the
last 500 meters. He finished seventh, scoring the Bulldogs’ only
points at the meet. His time, 10:22.11, was the fastest by a YSHS freshman
since at least 1982. He also beat his personal best by 15 seconds.
Junior Alban Holyoke pole vaulted
for the Bulldogs in his first regional competition on Wednesday and nearly
cleared opening height of 10 feet six inches. Holyoke cleared 10 feet
several times this year, over a foot improvement from his starting height
of eight feet six inches at the beginning of the year.
“He’s learning
by leaps and bounds and will come back next year as a senior with a good
shot at making it to state,” Peters said. “I’m very
proud of the progress he’s made.”
Brad Benning-Clark finished 12th in the 300-meter hurdles but did not
advance to the finals.
For the girls team, Tina Peters
finished the 3200 in 12th in 13:18. Her best this year was 13:02. Evin
Wimberly competed in the long jump and placed 11th in the preliminaries
on Wednesday. She did not advance to regional finals.
The girls 4x200 relay team
(Sierra Benning, Wimberly, Sarah Finn and Tricia McLinden) finished in
a season-record time of 1:51.5, but 10th place was not good enough to
advance to the finals.
This is the first time in seven
years that no Bulldog athletes advanced to the state track meet, but all
those who participated in the regional meet will return next year for
another chance to compete.

February.
The clinics provide instruction and skills for both girls new to basketball
