loss to Cedarville in the Division IV sectionals last Tuesday. YSHS
ended the year 6–8. |
The YSHS baseball team ended its season with two tough
losses and a rainout.
The Bulldogs lost 9–2 to Cedarville in the first
round of the Division IV Dayton sectional on Tuesday, May 11. The Bulldogs
then lost 3–2 to the Middletown Christian Eagles on Thursday, May
13.
Finally, on Monday, the baseball season ended just
as it began, in a rainstorm that canceled the Bulldogs’ final game,
against Middletown Christian. The team ended the season 6–8 and
in third place in the Metro Buckeye Conference.
In the sectional game, Cedarville jumped ahead, scoring
a run on an error and a hit at the top of the first. The Bulldogs tied
it up at the bottom of the inning on walks to Noah Woodburn and Dustin
Rudegeair and an error.
In the second, the Indians scored 3 more runs on an
equal number of Bulldog errors and never relinquished the lead. The Bulldogs
scored once more in the third when Woodburn reached base on an error and
scored on a wild throw.
On Thursday the Bulldogs traveled to Middletown Christian
for a makeup game, and Clayton Wolfe threw his best game of the year.
The Eagles got 4 hits in the second to go ahead 2–0.
In the third, a walk to Jansen Adkins and a double by Jake Fulton plated
the Bulldogs a run. Middletown scored 3 runs at the bottom of the third,
and a dry spell settled in until the ’Dogs staged a rally in the
seventh. Adkins hit a double and then scored on another double by Rudegeair.
Hope for the Bulldogs swelled when Fulton was walked, but the Bulldogs
couldn’t turn it into a run.
For the season, Rudegeair hit a 0.676 and Fulton led
the team in wins. Rudegeair, Fulton and Adkins were named to the MBC All-League
Team, and Marty Gasho was named to the Sportsmanship Squad.
Alumni baseball game
The Bulldogs invite all YSHS alumni baseball players to a game
on Friday, May 21, at 6 p.m., at the Gaunt Park field.
Netters fall at sectionals
The first and second doubles teams carried the only
wins for YSHS tennis last week, as the team finished out its regular season
and wrapped up tournament play in the same week.
The Bulldogs lost to Springfield Catholic Central,
4–1, Tuesday, May 11.
The team entered the Troy Division II sectional tournament
play the next day, where the doubles team of Paia LaPalombara and Nick
Rittenhouse and singles player Cary Dixon both made it to the second round
before getting knocked out.
The Bulldogs ended their season 4–13.
In tournament play in Troy, the second doubles team
had the Bulldogs’ only first round win, defeating Cedarville’s
Nathan Fawcett and Dale Grigorenko.
LaPalombara and Rittenhouse lost a first set tie breaker,
but avoided the net player for the rest of the match to win 6–7
(7–9), 6–2, 6–2. In the second round LaPalombara and
Rittenhouse faced the No. 2 seed, Jesse Miller and Michael Drennen of
Tipp City. LaPalombara and Rittenhouse were outmatched and lost 0–6,
0–6.
Price teamed with Duncan Silvert-Noftle in the sectional’s
first round and drew Northeastern’s Joe Culler and Matt Ark, against
whom the team’s record was 1–1. Price and Silvert-Noftle fell
behind 2–3 in the first set, and had trouble keeping the flood gates
closed, losing 2–6, 4–6.
In the singles bracket, Mori Rothman lost to Bryan
Barhorst of Sydney-Lehman 2–6, 1–6. Nic Huneck lost to Jason
Rost of Cedarville in the qualifier, 1–6, 3–6.
Dixon got a bye in the qualifier, but lost 0–6,
5–7 to Andrew Moore of Urbana in the first round. Dixon solved Moore’s
drop volley lob, but couldn’t pull out enough winners to catch up
in the second set.
At Springfield, the first doubles team of Scott Keyes
and Amy Price got the Bulldogs’ only win, 6–4, 6–1.
Keyes and Price struggled in the first set, then pulled away to win the
match handily. The duo finished the year 6–1, losing one match to
Miami Valley.
Dixon lost 1–6, 0–6 at first singles. Rothman
followed at second with a similar score, 2–6, 1–6. Though
Rothman started the rallies off as the aggressor and was up a break, 2–1,
he allowed his opponent in with overly defensive play. Huneck lost 2–6,
4–6 in a third singles match with many close games. Rittenhouse
and LaPalombara lost 0–6, 2–6 at second doubles.
