Margaret Florence (Scudder) Howard of Yellow Springs died May 5 at
the Friends Assisted Living Center. She was 92.
Born in Huntington, Ind., July 12, 1911, she was the daughter of Jesse
and Alta (Nelson) Scudder.
Margaret received her education in Huntington public schools and graduated
from Manchester College, Ball State Teachers College, both in Indiana,
and Columbia University Teachers College in New York.
She was a very dedicated and well-respected elementary teacher in
Bluffton, Ind., Huntington, Ind., and Yellow Springs, until her retirement
in 1972. Since moving to Yellow Springs in 1946, she had been active
in many community organizations such as the Community Children’s
Center, Library Association, First Presbyterian Church and the Senior
Center.
She was preceeded in death by her husband of 56 years, Kieth A. Howard,
a former editor and co-publisher of the Yellow Springs News; brother,
Dr. Arthur Scudder and his wife, Dorothy; sister, Elizabeth Scudder
Canine and her husband, Kenneth; her twin sister, Martha Scudder; brother-in-law,
John E. Howard and sister-in-law, Oca C. Howard.
She is survived by her children, Marilyn Lookabaugh and Kermit Wilson
and John M. and Christina Howard; grandchildren, Scott and Amanda Lookabaugh
and Kirk and Rachel Lookabaugh; great-granddaughter, Jordan Lookabaugh;
sister-in-law Cleo Howard; and four nephews and a niece.
A memorial service for Margaret and Martha Scudder, who died on April
18, 2004, will be held Saturday, May 29, at 10 a.m., at the First Presbyterian
Church. Donations in memory of Kieth and Margaret Howard may be made
to the Yellow Springs Community Foundation, P.O. Box 55, Yellow Springs,
or the charity of one’s choice.
David R. Shular
David Richard Shular of Yellow Springs died on Friday, May 7. He was
64.
Born on Feb. 20, 1940, in Twin Bridges, Mont., he was the son of Lillian
Dean Shular, a school teacher, and Newton Patison Shular, a hunter and
breeder of silver fox, handyman and gold prospector.
David was employed by Honeywell, Inc. in Urbana. He was involved with
People’s Temple for seven years and was married there to Janet
Ruth Louden Shular.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Janet; four children, John
David, Anthony Valentine, Jeima Louise Shular and Maria Shular Clavendetcher
Everhart; six grandchildren, Jessica McCurry, Elizabeth Shular, Anthony
David Shular, Gwen Everhart, Jayden Amir Shular and Leigh Summer Everhart;
siblings, Newton Shular, Dean Shular, Alicea Ann Shular Orr and Luck
Shular; two special co-workers, Julie Glasgow and Wetzel Nelson; and
many other family members and friends.
Visitation will be held at Central Chapel AME Church, 411 South High
Street, Friday, May 14, 10:30–11 a.m., with a memorial service
following at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Central Chapel
AME Church, 411 South High Street. Porter-Qualls Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
Dale R. Sheets
Dale R. Sheets of Yellow Springs died Monday, May 10, at 7:15 p.m.,
at Friends Care Community. He was 60.
He was born in Springfield on Aug. 1, 1943, the son of George Washington
and O. Darlene (Cole) Sheets.
Dale had many occupations in his life, most recently as a home health
aide. He was a member of the Union Club, Moose and Eagles. He loved
nature, especially spring outings to find mushrooms.
He is survived by his son, Todd A., and grandchildren, Todd R. and
Brittany Sheets of Yellow Springs; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald
of Northridge, Richard and Jean Sheets of Urbana and David and Donna
Sheets of New Port Richey, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dale requested that his body be cremated and that his son, Todd, scatter
his father’s ashes in the woods where they went mushroom hunting
so he could push up some mushrooms for Todd. Dale requested no funeral
services. Friends may call on Thursday, May 13, 6–7:30 p.m., at
Littleton & Rue, Springfield.
