Girls tie for first, boys place
second in home track meet
At last Wednesday’s home tri-meet, the YSHS boys
track team finished second with 51 points, behind Jefferson with 64 and
ahead of Waynesville’s 20.
All three girls teams tied with 40 points each.
The YSHS boys squad secured five first- and second-place
wins to increase their point total. The 3200 relay team of David Warren,
Matt Halm, Sam Borchers and David Carlson won in 9:46.8. Warren then ran
for two more wins, finishing the 1600 meter run in 4:57.8 and the 800
in 2:15.2. Bradley Benning-Clark also garnered two wins, finishing the
300 hurdles in 43.8 and taking the high jump with a leap of five feet
six inches.
Anthony Matheny finished the long jump in second place
with 17 feet 4 inches, before running the second leg of the 400 relay
— which also included Benning-Clark, Issa Walker and Brandon Frye
— a second-place finish in 48 seconds. Sam Borchers took second
in the 1600 and 800 meter runs, and Walker placed second in the high jump.
Frye finished the 100 meters in third place, as did
Halm in the 800 run. John Pamplin placed third in the discus with a throw
of 96 feet 11 inches.
Solid performances were also turned in by Jon Bullock
and Joe Lawhorn.
By the end of the day the Lady Bulldogs had seven first-place
finishes. Sarah Finn won the high jump with a leap of four feet, and Evin
Wimberly took the long jump with a leap of 15 feet 9 inches. Kirsten McLinden
launched the discus 75 feet 2 inches for another first-place finish. Tina
Peters won the 1600 in 6:11.
Finn won the 800 in 2:44, followed by Peters. The stellar
relay team of Sierra Benning, McLinden, Wimberly and Finn won both the
400 and the 800 relays. Wimberly placed second in the 200 meters.
Netters win two of three
The YSHS tennis team won two matches and lost a close third last week
to bring its season record to 4–8.
At Washington Court House on Wednesday, April 28, the
Bulldogs swept the doubles and all but the first singles to win 4–1.
At home the next day, Xenia Christian defeated the Bulldogs, 3–2,
but the home team came back on Monday to defeat Northeastern, 3–2.
Third singles player Nic Huneck played the toughest
match of Wednesday’s competition, coming back after a first set
loss to even the score at one set all. But he got down once more in the
third before stepping up his backhand approach and staying aggressive
at the net to win, 5–7, 6–2, 6–3.
Second singles posed a first set challenge for Cary
Dixon, who was able to take the tie break 7–3, then stampede through
the second without losing a game. The first doubles team of Amy Price
and Scott Keyes won handily, 6–0, 6–1, and Nick Rittenhouse
and Paia LaPalombara also won, 6–1, 6–2.
Mori Rothman challenged his first singles opponent
by winning the first set. But after watching a triple match point melt
away in the second set, he let down his guard and lost, 6–3, 6–7
(6–8), 2–6.
Coach Allen McCullough took partial responsibility
for the loss against Xenia Christian when he split up the first doubles
team of Price and Keyes. Keyes and LaPalombara lost at first doubles,
3–6, 6–2, 2–6. Price and Laura Garcia at second doubles
were up 3–1 in the second set, but they quickly lost momentum and
the match, 1–6, 3–6.
Dixon also lost at first singles, 5–7, 1–6.
Rothman easily won his second singles match, 6–0, 6–3, as
did Nick Rittenhouse at third singles, 6–0, 6–1.
But the Bulldogs had the weekend to recover, and they
came out strong against Northeastern, who beat the ’Dogs 4–1
earlier in the season. Price and Keyes were back together and won first
doubles, 6–3, 6–4, and Dixon won his third singles match,
6–4, 6–3. After Duncan Silvert-Noftle lost first singles,
3–6, 2–6, and Rothman lost second singles, 1–6, 5–7,
the match came down to the YSHS second doubles team of Rittenhouse and
Erin Silvert-Noftle.
After winning the first set 6–4, Rittenhouse
and Silvert-Noftle lost their focus and fell behind in the second set,
2–5. But they resolved not to give away easy points, and they came
back to win the set, 7–6 (7–4).
Having a full lineup made the difference the second
time around against Northeastern, McCullough said.
Gaining more match experience has helped the players
improve, the coach said, citing as examples Rittenhouse’s second
serve and Huneck’s strategic ball placement.
Baseball squad goes 1–2
The rain clouds parted long enough for the YSHS baseball team to
play a few games last week.
On Tuesday, April 27, the Bulldogs shook off the rust
and came home with a 20–12 win against Ridgeville Christian. Two
days later the team lost 12–9 at Miami Valley, then lost 19–5
to Springfield Catholic on Monday at home.
The Bulldogs are now 3–4.
Several players turned in fine performances at the
plate against Ridgeville Christian.
Kyle Truitt went 3 for 3, had 3 RBI and scored 5 runs.
Jake Fulton had 3 hits and 4 RBI. Dustin Rudegeair and Marty Gasho added
2 hits each.
And the fielding gem of the game came in the fourth
inning when second baseman Aaron Willis ran onto the outfield grass to
stab a hard grounder and throw out the runner.
The Bulldogs relinquished an early 6–1 lead to
Miami Valley on Thursday, but they battled back in the fifth inning to
regain the lead 8–7. The ’Dogs scored 5 runs on hits by Issa
Walker, Willis, Noah Woodburn, a couple of walks and Fulton’s double.
But in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs made two
critical throwing errors with two outs, opening the flood gates, and the
’Dogs could not recover.
Throwing woes continued against Springfield Catholic
early this week, mitigated only by Rudegeair’s three hits, Jansen
Adkins’s hustle, and Kyle Truitt’s fine outfield play. Rudegeair
raised his batting average to 0.739.
The Bulldogs host Cedarville in the first round of
the Dayton sectionals in the Division IV tournament next Tuesday, May
11, at 5 p.m. Admission is $4 a person. If they win, the Bulldogs will
play the winner of the Franklin-Monroe–Jefferson game on Thursday,
May 13, at 5 p.m.
