Bulldogs lose to Panthers
 |
| Nic Huneck, who played
second doubles with Nick Rittenhouse, returned a volley during their
three-set loss to Southeastern at home on Monday. |
The YSHS tennis team lost 4–1 to an undefeated
Southeastern team at home Monday.
The Bulldogs put out great effort for a lineup of close
matches, but the Panthers proved the stronger team. The Bulldogs are now
2–7.
Duncan Silvert-Noftle kept the score close in the first
set of his first singles match. A good effort and improved match strategy
carried him to 4–4, before his opponent took over. Silvert-Noftle
lost 6–4, 6–1.
The second singles match was tough for Mori Rothman,
who lost 6–1, 6–1 against a Southeastern player with a whip
of a forehand and a tricky serve. Playing against better competition is
a good challenge for the freshman singles player, who with a little more
aggressiveness, will only get better, coach Allen McCullough said.
Cary Dixon lost another close match, 6–4, 6–4,
in third singles. Dixon was down 4–5 in the first set and was frustrating
his opponent with a sharp net game. But Dixon was unable to take advantage
of his opponent’s weak backhand, and he narrowly lost the match.
The first doubles team of Amy Price and Scott Keyes
came back from a first set loss to win the only match of the day, 3–6,
6–3, 7–5. They rebounded from a 1–5 deficit in the third
set by winning six straight games to take the match.
Price and Keyes, who had never played together before,
complemented each other well. Price punished Southeastern with her steady
ground strokes, and Keyes turned out to be a terror at the net.
Nic Huneck and Nick Rittenhouse played with similar
momentum in their second doubles match, which with a little more punch
could have produced the same score. After losing the first set 3–6,
Huneck and Rittenhouse won the second set 6–0. But Southeastern
made its own adjustments late in the match and took the third set, 6–4.
