Baseball team rallies for win

Jake Fulton waits at home to tag a Miami Valley player in Thursday’s game.

Last Tuesday, April 6, the YSHS baseball team played to the tune of the old Broadway refrain, “You Gotta Have Heart,” by rallying five times to pull out a close 14–13 win over Ridgeville Christian. The following Thursday the Bulldogs hosted Miami Valley for a 13–0 shutout. The team is now 2–1, 2–0 in the MBC.

In the third inning of the Ridgeville game, trailing 3–0, the locals put together five hits to go ahead 4–3. In the seventh they fell behind 7–6 but rallied to tie the game. Poor fielding in the eighth put the ’Dogs down by 2, but a home run to center by Jake Fulton and some good base running by Kyle Truitt knotted the score at 9–9.

In the ninth, the Lions scored four more times, but YS came back again. Dusty Rudegeair launched his second home run of the game to make it 13–12, and Clayton Wolfe followed with his second double of the game. Then with one man out, Ridgeville’s pitcher walked Fulton and Truitt to load the bases. Aaron Willis hit a one-hop liner at the shortstop, the throw home went wild and the ’Dogs scored twice for a close win.

When the ’Dogs hosted Miami Valley on Tuesday, Jake Fulton tossed a two hitter for his first high school pitching victory. Rudegeair, Wolfe and Alex Wambaugh were the hitting stars with 3 RBI each.

Rudegeair is hitting .750 so far this year, with three home runs. Noah Woodburn has stolen nine bases.

YSHS tennis team loses to Urbana

The YSHS tennis team was missing most of its starters when the players lost 4–1 to a 6–0 Northeastern team last Wednesday, April 7. The loss brought the Bulldogs to a 2–3 season record. Last Monday’s game against Urbana was rained out.

The first doubles team of Nick Rittenhouse and Erin Silvert-Noftle won the only victory of the day in three sets 6–4, 2–6, 6–2. Silvert-Noftle punched back solid volleys in the first set before the Bulldogs’ overconfidence led to easy points for Northeastern in the second set. But a consistent forehand from Rittenhouse put the duo back on track for a mow down in the third.

Duncan Silvert-Noftle gave his first singles match to Northeastern at 6–2, 6–1. The Northeastern player took advantage of Silvert-Noftle’s fatigue and short chipping to take the match without a fight.

Cary Dixon lost at second singles 6–2, 6–4. Dixon hesitated to jump on short balls in the first set, but got more aggressive in the second. Down 4–5 but up 40–0 and staring down a frustrated Northeasterner, Dixon had a chance to tie the score at 5 all. But hesitation got the best of him, and he lost the game to cede the match.

Playing singles for the first time, third singles player Nic Huneck lost 6–1, 6–3 with good effort. The new pairing of Paia LaPalombara and Tina Chen was also outmatched in second doubles. Chen came out of reserve to play a strong first varsity match, but the YS team lost 6–3, 6–0.

YSHS girls track looks good

The Yellow Springs High School girls track team traveled to Dayton Christian on March 30 to place fifth out of eight schools with 31 points at the Xenia Christian Relays. Last Tuesday, April 6, the team went to Springfield Shawnee and finished third at the Shawnee tri-meet. Then this past Saturday the team went to Central State and placed seventh out of 16 teams at the Impson/Cedarville Invitational.

At Xenia Christian the Lady Bulldogs finished first with the 4x100 relay team of Tricia McLinden, Evin Wimberly, Sarah Finn and Sierra Benning and first in sprint medley (100, 100, 200 and 400 meters) relay with the team of Wimberly, Benning, Finn and Tina Peters.

In the combined shot put, Peters and Rory Maszaros finished in 6th place. The team scored with a 2nd place finish in the distance medley (400, 800, 1200 and 1600 meters) with Benning, Finn, McLinden and Peters, and a 5th place finish in the combined discus with McLinden and Finn adding their scores to place.

At Shawnee, Benning finished first in the 200 meter dash in 27.8 seconds. Finn placed second in the 200 in 28.1 seconds, and second in the 400 in 67.9 seconds.

The 4x200 relay team of McLinden, Wimberly, Megan Burrick and Benning finished 2nd in 1:57.8 and 2nd in the 4x100 relay. Finn won 2nd place in the high jump with 4'6". Wimberly jumped 15.0' for first place in the long jump, and McLinden jumped 13'10" for fourth place in long jump.

Peters finished 2nd in 3200 meter run in 13:47, 2nd in the 1600 meter run in 6:13.5, and 4th in 800 meter run in 2:55.0. The 4x400 meter relay team came in 3rd in 4:49 with the team of Finn, Burrick, McLinden and Peters.

At the Impson/Cedarville Invitational, Cincinnati-Wyoming was first with 77 points, followed by Cedarville with 64, Bethel with 56, Stivers with 54, Mount Orab Western Brown with 52, Springfield Southeastern with 49, and Yellow Springs with 36.

Finn placed in all four of her events, jumping 4'4" to place 5th in the high jump and fifth in the 400 meter dash. She ran on the 4x200 relay team with McLinden, Wimberly, and Benning to finish third, and then ran with the same three girls to finish fourth in the 4x100 relay.

Coach Vince Peters said he was particularly pleased with the 4x100 relay, which finished in a good early-season time of 54.76 seconds. The team was just 100th of a second short of beating Wyoming and nearly took second place over Jefferson as well.

Wimberly jumped to second place in the long jump with a 14'11.5" leap. Peters placed fourth out of 18 in the 1600 meter run and just missed breaking the 6-minute barrier with a time of 6:00.81. Then in a strategic 3200 meter run, Peters hung behind the two front runners on a windy day and waited until the last two laps to start her kick. She ran the first in 90 seconds and maintained her pace to win the event by 150 meters in 13:08.10.

Distance runners lead boys track

At the Yellow Springs High School boys track meet at Springfield Shawnee on Tuesday, April 6, distance runners David Warren and Sam Borchers crowded the two other teams out of first and second place in the mile and two mile runs to help Yellow Springs to a second place finish with 43.5 points. Borchers was just seconds behind Warren, taking second place in both distance events, with a time of 5:13 in the 1600 and 11:26 in the 3200. Brandon Frye took second in the 100 meter dash in 11. 8

seconds. Bradley Benning-Clark took second in the 300 meter hurdles in 44.9.

Second place in both the 400 and 800 relays went to the team of Benning-Clark, Anthony Brandon, Issa Walker and Frye. Alban Holyoke pole vaulted to a height of 9'6", and Benning-Clark jumped to a height of 5'8" for two additional second place wins.

Third place in the long jump went to David Carlson, who leapt to 15'4". Fourth place finishes went to John Pamplin at discus, Issa Walker in the high jump, Joe Lawhorn in the 110 and 300 hurdles, Matt Halm in the 800 meter run, and to the team of Warren, Borchers, Carlson and Halm in the 1600 relay.

On Saturday, Benning-Clark took the Bulldogs’ lone first place in the 300 meter hurdles in 44.20. Anthony Brandon jumped 18'4.5" to take second place in the long jump.
