Rebecca Haynes
Rebecca Marie (Brown) Blain Haynes of Springfield died on Tuesday,
Feb. 17, in Mercy Medical Center. She was 60.
Born in Springfield on March 8, 1943, she was the daughter of Harold and
Winifred (Elliott) Brown. She had worked as a hairdresser in the Springfield
area for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin sons, Stephen and
Sanford Blain.
She is survived by one son, Kenneth Scot Blain of Chattanooga, Tenn.;
daughter, Stephanie Marie Linz of Springfield; grandchildren, Sunshine
and Michael Anderson, and great-grandson, Caleb Anderson all of Lincoln
Park, Mich.; two brothers, and a sister-in-law, Harold and Kay Brown and
Kenneth Brown, all of Springfield; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and
Tom Roush of Washington Court House; and uncles and aunts, Donald and
Delores Elliott of Springfield and Barb and Bill Carlisle of Yellow Springs.
A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 20, in the Littleton & Rue
Funeral Home in Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the

James DeWalt
James Samuel DeWalt of Sebring, Fla., died on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Sebring.
He was 70.
Born Feb. 21, 1933, in Shelby, Ohio, he was the son of Dale A. and Hazel
L. (Fisher) DeWalt. He had lived in Sebring since 1994.
He was a logistics manager with the U.S. Civil Service, a veteran of the
U.S. Army and Air National Guard, and a member of St. John United Methodist
Church in Sebring.
He was a master mason of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 421 in Yellow
Springs; BPOE Lodge 1529 in Sebring; American Legion Post 25 in Lake Placid;
National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 288 and the
Enlisted Association of the Ohio Air National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann DeWalt; sons, Michael and Stephen
DeWalt, both of Xenia, Frank Quallen Jr. of Atlanta, Charles Quallen of
Xenia and Paul Quallen of Sebring; daughter, Jeri DeWalt of Xenia; brothers,
Richard DeWalt of Sebring and Thomas DeWalt of Travelers Rest, S.C.; sister,
Shirley Oldfield Trueax of Sebring; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 27, at St. John United Methodist
Church in Sebring. Additional services with Masonic rites and inurnment
will be held at a later date in Jamestown. Memorial contributions may
be made to either St. John United Methodist Church, 3214 Grand Prix Drive,
Sebring, Florida 33872, or a charity of choice.
David Kohn
David Eugene Kohn of Springfield died on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Community
Hospital, following a lengthy illness. He was 75.
Born on June 8, 1928, he was the son of James W. and Ada M. (Dunlap) Kohn.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Yellow Springs and the United
Auto Workers Local 402 and Local 926.
Mr. Kohn was preceded in death by his wife, Doris (Auckerman) Kohn, in
October 2000; his parents; three sisters, Mary L. Harwood, Faith D. Snyder
and Esther Kohn; and two brothers, James W. Kohn and Linn E. Kohn.
He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Connie Burke and
Shannon Jackson of Springfield, Candy Kohn and Mark Valentine of Grove
City, Jean Kohn and Robert Grant of Florida and Terri Kohn of Georgia;
one son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Janet Sue Burke of Springfield;
two sisters, Julia R. Tuvell of Tremont City and Jo Anne E. Swords of
Montrose, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Littleton & Rue
Funeral Home in Springfield, with burial following in Rosehill Burial
Park. Memorial gifts may be made to Scholarship Fund Community Hospital

George Mercer
George Whitfield Mercer died on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Mercy Medical
Center in Springfield, Mass., after a long illness. He was 70.
Born on June 1, 1933, in Xenia, he was the son of Max George and Clara
Margaret Mercer.
George graduated from Bryan High School in 1951 and Ohio State University
with a B.A. in zoology in 1960. He received a master’s degree in
botany from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1968 and a Ph.D.
in limnology from the University of Vermont in 1972.
He believed strongly in education and chose it as his primary vocation.
He taught and took classes in various locations around the country and
was a professor of biology at Johnson State College in Johnson, Vt., for
13 years.
As a final act of teaching, George’s body was donated to the University
of Massachusetts for educational purposes.
He enjoyed his family, the outdoors and the study of nature. He was an
avid gardener, growing many varieties of vegetables. He loved to frequent
farmers’ markets and visit with many fellow horticultural enthusiasts.
A daily reader of The New York Times (in his words, “the best newspaper
in the world”) he enjoyed keeping up with current events and expanding
his knowledge of history. He followed many sports and was a New York Giants
and Yankees fan. He loyally thought that Ohio State should “never
lose to Michigan.” Not one to mince words, he always told it like
he saw it. He loved telling stories of particularly humorous events in
his life or embellishing tales from others. His hearty laugh will always
be remembered.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Alan.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Hartford, N.Y.; two sons, Stuart
and Ian and their families, including his grandchildren, Matthew, Liam,
Ellie, Nathaniel and Caelyn; his aunts, Clara and Helen; his stepmother,
Martha Mercer; two brothers, Charles of Yellow Springs and Chris; two
stepsons, Greg and Steve; nephews, a niece and cousins.
A memorial service will be held in the spring.
Avanell Waits
Former Greene County resident Avanell Gibbs Waits died on Monday, Feb.
2. She was 68.
Born on Dec. 16, 1935, in West Liberty, Ky., she was the daughter of the
late Everett and Ina Gibbs.
She was a 1954 graduate of Bryan High School. For the last 30 years, she
had lived in Ft. Myers and Cape Coral, Fla. She was a member of First
Assembly of God in Ft. Myers, where she was a longtime choir member and
was active with the Special People’s Ministry.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Waits, four brothers
and two sisters.
She is survived by her loving husband Kenneth Waits, whom she married
in 1955; children, Phyllis and Rob Adams of Xenia, Dale and Cleo Waits
of Cape Coral, and Pam Waits of Cape Coral; four sisters Nancy Dihrkop,
Yvonne Metcalf, Juanita Cruea and Jeannie Owens; eight grandchildren,
Ryan and Lauren Hoover, Andrea Malavich, Amanda, Kenny and Tyler Waits,
and DJ and Nikki Wiercinski.
Her friends and family will gather in memory and celebration of her life
on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m., at Christ Community Church, 3370 Upper Bellbrook
Road in Bellbrook. The service will be performed by Rev. Herb Hoover.
A funeral service was held on Feb. 6, with committal service following
at Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Barrett Hollister memorial service
A memorial service for Barrett Hollister will be held Saturday, Feb. 28,
at 2:30 p.m., in the Glen Helen Building.
Hollister died on Friday, Feb. 6, just short of his 90th birthday.
