OBITUARIES
James Winter
James S. Winter of Yellow Springs died at home
on Tuesday, Jan. 27. He was 75 and had been in ailing health since last
August.
Born on Jan. 18, 1929, in Red Oak, Iowa, he was the
son of Francis and Grace (Holverstott) Winter.
His family moved to Urbana in the 1940s, where James
attended high school and junior college. He was a graduate of Wittenberg
University.
He served two years in the Army as a scientific engineer
while stationed in Maryland. After his honorable discharge, he worked
for Vernay Laboratories in Yellow Springs until he retired at 55.
James was a member of the Xenia Church of Christ. He
had his own airplane and loved to fly whenever he could. He also loved
bicycling and would even ride in temperatures below freezing.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Chettie (Jones
Grinnell) Winter; two stepsons, Robert A. Grinnell and his family, and
Steven S. Grinnell and his family; a sister, Laura Jo Horn of St. Louis
and her twin brother, John H. Winter of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a host of
nieces and nephews and other family members and friends.
He asked that his remains be donated to the Wright
State School of Medicine for research. A memorial service for his family
and friends will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to the Xenia Church of Christ, 444 Country Club Drive, Xenia,
OH 45385, or the American Heart Association. |
